Sunday, August 02, 2009. Using the Medical Model. Here in BC we have health "authorities," who decide what services will be provided, in which way, and how the public relations will be handled. This is not an elected system, it is a mild form of dictatorship that exists. Homeless people fight because that's how they have survived until now. Do you expect them to abandon this inner-strength because your "team" needs order? Model is an ineffective way to address the. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). 54 Ways You...

Formerly Homeless: Poor People are Built for Generosity

Monday, March 16, 2015. Poor People are Built for Generosity. A new short film shows that sometimes, people who have less give more. (link). The idea that people who experience extreme poverty are more generous is not new. To me, its part of the culture of poverty. I grew up in poverty, and my mother was always clear that we should help those less fortunate, and never think of our lives as more valuable than the next. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Yet I have been wildly successful in getting people housed. So if landlords are taking the people I am advocating for, and getting burned at times, what does that mean in the long run? Well, you may say, those “bad tenancy” people can always get into supportive housing, right? In conclusion, I will say that Hous...

Formerly Homeless: November 2009

Tuesday, November 03, 2009. I am sometimes shocked at the amount of money we spend on fear. Take the income assistance system. I was staring at the Ministry of Housing and Social Development building the other day (that’s our complicated name for “welfare building” here in BC), and I suddenly realized that this 5 story building containing hundreds and hundreds of well-educated professionals had a singular purpose:. Was it to assess people, or emotionally support people? This entire building was full of m...

Thursday, March 13, 2014. Social Inclusion and the Homeless - Not for Vegans! Social Inclusion and the Homeless - Not for Vegans! Social Inclusion needs to be MEATIER:. The people on the street have been through so much, they simply don't have the time for tokenism. If they think you are wasting their time with yet another survey, they will just not show up. This requires some careful listening, and a good deal of thought about what "meaningful" means. When it comes to homelessness, we have been doing th...

As a matter of heart…. This is still on my mind, so I thought I’d share an experience I had yesterday…. I was buying coffee in Kensington; a man came in to buy some candy. He commented that he was going to be nickel and diming [the cashier], today, to which she responded that it was fine. I was feeling particularly low yesterday and needed to do something for someone so I could feel at least a little human… They both made a big deal of it, but it only cost me $2.
