Oral history tells us that the Ojibway Nation was one of the largest nations in North America. We migrated from the eastern seaboard to the west side of Lake Huron, Lake Michigan and Lake Superior, pushing the Sioux further west. We made our way into this area from the southern portion of Chippewa territory in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Well known for our hospitality, we shared our knowledge and medicines with early settlers which enabled them to survive their first difficult years in a sometimes harsh land.

Remember Rama

March 27, 1977 - November 2, 2013. Rama Fire, a former Friday Harbor resident and graduate of Friday Harbor High School, died in a moped accident Nov. 2 on Maui. He was 36 years old. No one else was injured in the accident. Survivors include his mom and dad, Jeannie Turner and Steve Schramm; brother Leon; father, Mink Fire; and large and loving families, including the Waldron families and Mrowka families of Friday Harbor.
