A girl’s journey into wildlife rehabilitation. From the NWRA website. What is Wildlife Rehabilitation? Wildlife rehabilitation is not an attempt to turn wild animals into pets. Patients are held in captivity only until they are able to live independently in the wild. Fear of humans is a necessary survival trait for wild animals and every effort is made to minimize human contact and prevent the taming of rehabilitation patients. Often this is an elaborate and time-consuming process. Wildlife rehabilitator...

A girl’s journey into wildlife rehabilitation. Archive for June, 2009. On June 23, 2009 by Dawn. I went easy on the birds yesterday during our rehab session. Why? Because it was about 95 degrees here in Iowa. Doesn’t that happen later in the summer, like late July or August? Summer certainly isn’t wasting any time this year. The day after the solstice and it’s already so hot that even going outside to fill the bird feeder is like spending a moment in hell, if hell was incredibly sunny. I think i love you.

A girl’s journey into wildlife rehabilitation. Archive for April, 2009. Boring entry, but with diagrams! On April 21, 2009 by Dawn. I drove out to the raptor center tonight, mentally prepared to deal with a difficult red-tailed hawk and bitey great horned owl. It was half stormy and half bright and sunshiney, so it was kind of like my mood – happy at getting to work with the birds, but less than thrilled about going out during the first of what will be many spring storms. I could see a very small amount ...

A girl’s journey into wildlife rehabilitation. Archive for May, 2008. With tags bird blind. On May 16, 2008 by Dawn. Godspeed, little hawk! It was a pleasure meeting you, and may I just say. For allowing me to help you heal. And then, after having released my anxiety and irritability, I went home. I stopped on my way out of the Macbride Nature Area and snapped some photos of the high lake level. It looked like a swamp. Visit my Flickr page. On May 9, 2008 by Dawn. You can tell a young RTHA from an adult ...

A girl’s journey into wildlife rehabilitation. On August 5, 2009 by Dawn. I’ve decided to take a hiatus from posting here at For the Birds. I’m not sure when I’ll be back…I enjoy posting but my heart is not currently in it. If you haven’t been for a visit lately, stop out and see our birds! They (and the MRP) are my favorite things about Iowa City. So stop on over there and say hello. If you have any questions or comments, leave them here or email me at kittycatbandit@gmail.com.
