A visit to A and R Photographic, Liverpool | rashbre snapped

https://rashbre.wordpress.com/2011/10/14/a-visit-to-a-and-r-photographic-liverpool

There is fun going forward. A visit to A and R Photographic, Liverpool. During the week I was able to visit my good friend the photographer Imran Ali. He runs his studio from Liverpool Bluecoat and along with the excited conversation of catching up with one anothers’ exploits, we were able to tinker with the range of goodies in his studio. And as a delightful addition, we also had blogger friend Debra join us and add Vlad the Hasselblad into the equation. 8220;So How would you set up this lighting? There...

There is fun going forward. Keeping my main blog “rashbre central” running requires a fairly steady stream of pictures. The pictures that make it to that blog are from a mixture of sources from fancy DSLRs, an occasional film shot, some iPhone (the London shots this week are from the iPhone) and various point and shoot clickers. I haven’t even set up the ‘RAW’ mode yet, so here’s a quick ‘through the window’ shot as a test. The fun is also to be able to use my other micro 4/3 lenses with it – which...

Street Photography Experiments | rashbre snapped

https://rashbre.wordpress.com/2011/08/23/street-photography-experiments

There is fun going forward. I’m trying a few attempts at street photography (beyond simply snapping ‘the street’) and am trying to build up a few simple learning points from the experience. No: At one time I tried using a ‘coffee cam’. Which was a camera I’d put into a coffee cup. It was really a bit of whimsy, but illustrated the need for something with greater precision. 2) Smaller camera works best:. 5) Look like a snapper:. 6)Switch off all the bleeps:. 8211; I use a filter instead. 7)Go Hyper focal :.

There is fun going forward. Mistakes with Film (1). Bull;Saturday, 20 December, 2008 • 2 Comments. I do enjoy playing around with film alongside my more digital photography. I’m just not so good at getting it processed so there can be some delays in seeing the output. I thought today I’d share some of my mistakes and experiments as I try to get the settings correct. Olympus OM2, 21mm f3.5. 1) focus 2)camera shake. 1) crap composition, 2) focus, 3) POV. A few lessons for me:. 4) Practice some non eye shots.

Stoppees’ guide to Photography and Light | rashbre snapped

https://rashbre.wordpress.com/2009/03/21/stoppees-guide-to-photography-and-light

There is fun going forward. Stoppees’ guide to Photography and Light. See how the light falls across the cover of the book in the picture? And how the window by which this picture was taken is hinted about? How the title of the book is in shadow so that it stands out? And the authors’ names and the publisher are visible with just a little more inspection – but less than if it were a blatent product shot? Its a heavy book to carry at some 500 pages, but its well divided into sections and has comprehensive...

Ship of Fools / Unto Leviathan by Richard Paul Russo – Frequently Arsed Questions

https://frequentlyarsed.wordpress.com/2013/09/17/ship-of-fools-unto-leviathan-by-richard-paul-russo

Fiction and non-fiction books. Ship of Fools / Unto Leviathan by Richard Paul Russo. 17 September, 2013. I don’t know why exactly, but this book always haunts me. It’s one of the few novels I like to re-read, and I’m currently on my fourth go at it. Here be spoilers,. By the way. So read no further if you want to read the book in innocence. Russo is not as well-known (nor as prolific) as the likes of Stephen Baxter. Or Robert Charles Wilson. But there’s something about this particular book. Has followed ...

The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison – Frequently Arsed Questions

https://frequentlyarsed.wordpress.com/2015/07/20/the-goblin-emperor-by-katherine-addison

Fiction and non-fiction books. The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison. 20 July, 2015. 20 July, 2015. It’s not what you think it’s going to be. Those are the words you’ll hear frequently in connection with the Nebula/Hugo-nominated. The Goblin Emperor,. Katherine Addison’s novel of court intrigue against the steampunk backdrop of a fantasy kingdom of goblins and elves. (Which immediately puts me in mind of Woody Allen’s ‘ The Ransom Note. Why the fantasy backdrop? Jason Isbell – Something More Than...

Jason Isbell – Something More Than Free – Frequently Arsed Questions

https://frequentlyarsed.wordpress.com/2015/07/20/jason-isbell-something-more-than-free

Fiction and non-fiction books. Jason Isbell – Something More Than Free. 20 July, 2015. 20 July, 2015. After catching on – late, thanks, iTunes – to Jason Isbell’s Southeastern. I pre-ordered his 2015 offering Something More Than Free. It’s pretty much more of the same good stuff possibly an even better collection of tunes. Isbell has a pleasant, gruff voice, and sings with an oddly affecting deadpan that allows his lyrics to shine through the song arrangements. Are you living the life you chose? College ...

RFM – Frequently Arsed Questions

https://frequentlyarsed.wordpress.com/author/maximumbob

Fiction and non-fiction books. 24 August, 2016. 24 August, 2016. Uprooted by Naomi Novik. This Nebula award winning novel was published in 2015 and has the benefit of being (so far at least) a standalone book and not part of a series. I’m on record. As not being the biggest fan of the fantasy genre, though I clearly like it more than, say, someone who never reads any. But I picked this up because it won the award an I’m glad I did. Which means this book had to overcome a lot of prejudice to win me over.

Fiction and non-fiction books. 17 July, 2015. The BBC’s online complaints form makes you jump through a lot of hoops before you get to actually complain, but here’s what I submitted. The Three-Body Problem by Cixin Liu – Review – Frequently Arsed Questions

https://frequentlyarsed.wordpress.com/2015/08/08/the-three-body-problem-by-cixin-liu-review

Fiction and non-fiction books. The Three-Body Problem by Cixin Liu – Review. 8 August, 2015. 8 August, 2015. The hyphen in the title is important, of course. Without it, you could be forgiven for thinking of this as some kind of thriller. In which a killer. Has the problem of disposing of three bodies. The hyphenated title refers to the problem of calculating the chaotic orbits and relative positions of three massive objects or bodies (stars, actually) in space. It’s an alien invasion story, though you w...

Ashley Monroe: The Blade – Review – Frequently Arsed Questions

Fiction and non-fiction books. Ashley Monroe: The Blade Review. 6 August, 2015. This is an update to my earlier. Partial review, in which I gave the opinion that even though I’d only heard half of the album (the pre-released tracks), The Blade. Was set to be the best album of 2015. Now I’ve had the whole thing for a week or so, I’m just as firm in that opinion. I still find the modern release cycle annoying, but at least The Blade. The three hookiest tracks of The Blade. Which features a similar rhythm s...

Fiction and non-fiction books. How to turn a caring lefty into a foam-flecked hateful Tory in just 90 of your minutes. 24 July, 2015. 24 July, 2015. Somebody asked me about the Channel Tunnel situation a few days before we left. What did I think, were there risks etc. I didn’t think there was really much danger of a migrant jumping in your car. Kacey Musgraves – Pageant Material // Ashley Monroe – The Blade – Frequently Arsed Questions

Fiction and non-fiction books. Kacey Musgraves Pageant Material / Ashley Monroe The Blade. 24 June, 2015. 24 June, 2015. I’m not entirely sure, but I can’t help thinking Kacey Musgraves has gone a bit Lynyrd Skynyrd. Not in terms of sound that’s simply an evolution of what it was before but in terms of what she sings. You know the story of Lynyrd Skynyrd: excellent first album ( Pronounced). So how good was that first album? I think it was. Good My daughter liked it more than me. I thought the stripp...

Thursday, 13 August 2015. Camille O'Sullivan at The Queens Hall Edinburgh. We'd walked from a prior show across to the Queens Hall to see Camille O'Sullivan perform an evening of Jacques Brel songs. Clearly some of her favourites as she explained how they were played at home whilst she was growing up. Camille is a well known Edinburgh Fringe performer, and there's an interesting interview about her all-too-familiar starting experiences in Edinburgh in the Guardian, from a year ago. We loved every minute.

Thursday, February 18, 2010. When the mood strikes, pie! Thoughtfully, Albert brought me home a big bag of mini golden apples. A big bag! I removed them from their bag and arranged them on my poker party plate. They sat and sat for days, well ok. Four, and then like a bolt of lightning it hit me. Apple Pie! But I had never made apple pie. But I have a handy dandy apple peeler/corer/spiraler! I eventually consulted the Southern Sideboards cookbook And found one seriously lackluster Apple Harvest Pie. ...
