Clubhouse History | RCOP Fund

Founded in 1882 by 22 prominent Philadelphians and incorporated by the State of Pennsylvania in 1889, The Racquet Club had two previous clubhouses before Horace Trumbauer was appointed to design the current clubhouse in 1907. The first clubhouse was located at 913 Carpenter Street from 1885-1889 and had two Racquets courts in the backyard. Another clubhouse was purchased in 1889 at 923 Walnut Street which was home to the first regulation squash racquet court in Philadelphia. Designed by Crowell Creative.

Squash Doubles | RCOP Fund

The original doubles squash location was where Court B currently resides but when racquets began to lose interest, the second racquets court was converted into the current doubles court. Due to the remarkable height of the ceiling, The Racquet Club doubles court is considered to be one of the best in the country. Designed by Crowell Creative.

It has been said of court tennis that it is a game of moving chess, that it combines the exactitude of billiards, the hand-eye coordination of lawn tennis, and the generalship and quick judgment of polo. Rob Whitehouse, the Club’s Head Professional, is a Court Tennis Hall of Famer and our current tennis pro, John Lumley is ranked 10th in the world. In the Spring of 2017, in collaboration with The Racquet Club of Philadelphia, the Fund will contribute to the renovation for the roof of the historic Horace Trumbauer clubhouse. Repointing the Brick Façade. In the second half of 2017, in collaboration with The Racquet Club of Philadelphia, the Fund will contribute to the repointing and restoration of the Clubhouse’s facade. Designed by Crowell Creative.

Racquets | RCOP Fund

Racquets is now known to be the world’s fastest racket sport and is credited with being the catalyst to the invention of squash. In 1830, the slower game of squash was invented out of necessity at the Harrow School in England. Racquets proved to be too fast of a game for beginners so squash was invented as a means to become acclimated to the rules and speed of the game.
