‘The Goalkeeper’ Bert Trautmann | The Forgotten Past
https://historyug.wordpress.com/2015/01/14/bert-trautmann-the-goalkeeper
8216;The Goalkeeper’ Bert Trautmann. January 14, 2015. As far as iconic cult heroes go I don’t know of any held in such high regard for bravery and determination as Bernhard Carl ‘Bert’ Trautmann, football fan or not! However at the time when this story starts Bert certainly wouldn’t have been considered a hero, actually quite the opposite in fact. Bert begun his life of freedom by working on a farm, then in a bomb disposal unit whist also playing football for his local team St Helens. You are commenting...

‘Red 12’ Pilot Ewald Trost | The Forgotten Past
https://historyug.wordpress.com/2014/12/24/ewald-trost-red-12-pilot
8216;Red 12’ Pilot Ewald Trost. December 24, 2014. There are lots of stories of the local POW’s, accounts of the boredom and the monotony of their controversial incarceration in the Cheshire area. Links between the heroic actions of individuals during World War 2 and the prisoners who were held in Cheshire have either been lost or never really been highlighted. Most of the information for this blog post was sourced in the book:. Bodenplatte: The Luftwaffe’s Last Hope. Roman Roads… Lost and Found. You are...

WW2 Decoy Control Bunker Sandbach | The Forgotten Past
https://historyug.wordpress.com/2014/12/28/ww2-control-bunker-sandbach
WW2 Decoy Control Bunker Sandbach. December 28, 2014. Overall the bunker is a nice piece of surviving local unmolested history. Although no fixtures, fittings or real internal features have survived within the bunker, it is off the beaten track so there isn’t the usual vandalism and graffiti these type of buildings often attract. ‘The Artist’ POW Wilhelm Rubenbauer | The Forgotten Past

8216;The Artist’ POW Wilhelm Rubenbauer. December 30, 2014. This is an interesting story about a German prisoner of war called Wilhelm Rubenbauer who was held at camp 193, which I picked up from the Madeley Village website. Wilhelm Rübenbauer was China painter and a budding artist with aspirations to attend the Academy of Arts. Before he could complete his studies in hand painted glass and porcelain he was called up for war duty. Who was born in 1951 was later so inspired by his father’s work that ...

WW2 POW Camp Weston | The Forgotten Past
https://historyug.wordpress.com/2014/12/17/ww2-pow-camp-weston-crewe
WW2 POW Camp Weston. December 17, 2014. Prisoners held at Weston were typical ‘white’ prisoners unlike many, after capture and interrogation they were deemed not politically motivated. Just regular young men unfortunate to be caught up in the politics of war. The prisoners in this camp after gaining the trust of the guards were able to engage in local community events and in some instances wander free in and out of the camps outside of their working hours. 8216;Billy The Kid’ William Rushton. February 21, 2015. My fascination with local history, World War 2 and my football club Crewe Alexandra all came together one evening when reading through a statement relating to Japanese war crimes from a British prisoner of war interned at a Japanese camp during the second world war. I read the following account from Gunner Eric Vasey of the 21st Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment and it certainly sparked my curiosity. I was in the same working party and Rushton did not pe...

POW Camp Weston Layout | The Forgotten Past

POW Camp Weston Layout. January 4, 2015. The wonders of modern technology, specifically google earth combined with some local knowledge from the previous owner of Snape farm have enabled me to specifically label the function of each and every building at the Weston camp. In 2006 two of the larger now missing buildings were dismantled and transported to be used in building an extension to existing Nissen huts at the Sywell Aviation Museum.
