World of Warships | sparcie
https://sparcie.wordpress.com/2015/07/27/world-of-warships
I didn’t get to posting this weekend because I’ve become pretty much addicted to World of Warships which is now in open beta. I hadn’t played the other games because I’m not as interested in tanks or warplanes, but when I ran into some videos on youtube from the Mighty Jingles,. I just had to give it a go. I thought I’d give some of my first impressions. The ships are organised into tiers with older less powerful ships at the bottom ranging to the most powerful at the top. I’m still on lower ti...Using a...

Downloads | sparcie

Here are downloads that I’m offering, eventually I’ll mirror them somewhere else but they are located on my old Celeron 2.4Ghz. At home, I used to run the server on my old Sparcstation 20 but have since migrated it to other duties. Since I’ve been having issues with my ADSL connection sometimes I also have all the files contained in the sections below available from a shared google drive folder. You can find the folder here. Various GW-Basic programs I’ve created. Responses to “Downloads”. Xerix 2 for DOS.

Here are some links to pages/video series that I quite enjoy. Anatoly has a podcast, videos and blog posts all about our favourite retro DOS games. He has a unique perspective partly because he grew up in Russia, and he has guests from all over the world on his podcasts. I find the podcast in particular a very good listen as he and his guest go into great depth into a subject. Is a web video series exclusively about Dos games (duh! Is a website with information about pretty much every old retro computer ...

2012SC Roundup | Retrochallenge Competition | 2015/07
http://www.wickensonline.co.uk/retrochallenge-2012sc/2012/08/02/competition-roundup
On August 2, 2012. So we come to the roundup. I’ve summarised the competition here from my perspective unless specifically mentioning either Dale (Twitter Monkey) or John Linville our guest judge. The summary entries are in the order that contestants entered. John our judge picked out three winners and named two as honourable mentions. I’ve also taken the liberty of marking Dale and my favourites. Everyone who posted anything significant during the month is listed here. By the pool in Portugal. I kno...

DGTech PVR Tear down | sparcie

DGTech PVR Tear down. Having done some cleaning up recently I have finally started to make my workspace usable again. So today I decided to take a look at some hardware I’ve been meaning to tear apart for salvage. My old DGTech DG-HDPVR5009 set top box that doesn’t tune into signals properly anymore. Upon removing the hard disk I found this IDE (also known as PATA or ATA) to SATA converter. This one allows a SATA device to be used with a more traditional IDE interface card. Most converters I saw ...Here ...

Space Intruders for DOS | sparcie
https://sparcie.wordpress.com/2015/08/12/space-intruders-for-dos
Space Intruders for DOS. Today I played a clone of Space Invaders simply called Space Intruders. It was made by Softlair Computer F/X back in 1993. We got this particular game from a shareware magazine cover disc back in the day, it would have to be the only Space Invaders clone or otherwise that I really played at the time. As a clone of Space Invaders it’s not super faithful because of how much that one difference changes, but as a basic arcade shooter it’s pretty fun. This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Author Archive for Andrew Danson. Skunny: Save our Pizzas for DOS. You could argue that my luck hasn’t improved when Skunny: Save our Pizzas did work for me. It was made by Copysoft back in 1993, around the same time as the two other games I’ve already looked at, Lost in Space. And Back to the Forrest. They are all infamously bad in one way or another, so whilst I hadn’t played this one before I had low expectations before beginning. It’s certainly a nutty story to match the nutty character! Game-play wi...

Here is an index of some series of posts I have done to make them easier to find. I tried to set this up in a menu, but I didn’t like the result. This series is documenting and commenting on the small collection of mainboards I have. Mainboard: Generic Socket 3. This series started when I looked at some benchmarking software for DOS here. I read a fan-boy rant about comparing the C64 to the ZX Spectrum and decided to attempt an unbiased comparison of my own. Storage Photo Tour 1. Storage Photo Tour 2.

IBM PS/2 Model 55sx | ancientelectronics

Retro computing and gaming plus a little more. IBM PS/2 Model 55sx. August 6, 2015 – 18:36. Posted in classic computers. As you can see there is no separate molex connector for power and the power is supplied via the floppy cable connector. This connector is not IDE though it looks like it. PS/2 floppy drives typically feature a large blue eject button on the front sometimes with the disk format on the button. Now lets take a look at the rear of this machine. The switch on the front of the case is actual...
