The first time was a Friday night when we were outside of Santa Cruz, about to sleep in our car for the third night in a row. Coastal California is by and large a terrible place for free tent camping. RVs and vans line Highway 1 from Big Sur to San Francisco. Tents do not. The morning after I wrote this. In 2013 the two weirdos (spoiler alert: it’s us, Brenden and Cat) got married, and a few months later Joe and Emily Richmond sold their car, packed their few belongings into a uhaul truck, and made the pilgrimage to New York City.
