http://rideventures.blogspot.com/2016/05/autumn-epic-first-climb.html
Sportives in mid-Wales and the West Midlands. Autumn Epic - the first climb. I'll be covering all the significant hills on the Autumn Epic. Over the next few weeks - here's the first one you'll encounter on the October sportive. The route heads north-west out of Knighton on the gently rising B4355. The road is in a valley with the River Teme on your right (and the Wales/England border). On the day this is a 20km warm-up where group pacelines develop. About 200m beyond a red "Danger Landslip" sign the hil...

Rideventures: Col du Glandon/Croix de Fer
http://rideventures.blogspot.com/2013/08/col-du-glandoncroix-de-fer.html
Sportives in mid-Wales and the West Midlands. Col du Glandon/Croix de Fer. Starting from La Chambre this is one of the classic Tour climbs. It starts inside the town and goes up at an easy 7% Markers show each of the 20km you are about to climb. But soon (km17) you get a taste of 9 to 11% before returning to reasonable inclines. Famous Tour attacks happen in this last section of relentless 9 to 11% slopes. Cafe notes - Glandon has a bar 200m off the top. Croix de Fer has one right at the top. Ill be cove...

Rideventures: Maratona dles Dolomites recce
http://rideventures.blogspot.com/2013/06/maratona-dles-dolomites-recce.html
Sportives in mid-Wales and the West Midlands. Maratona dles Dolomites recce. Looking back down to Corvara from the start of Campologno. The Maratona dles Dolomites has easily the most spectacular setting of any Granfondo in Italy. The shattered pinnacles of massive rock mountains ring the course, and the slight gaps in between them is where the Granfondo slips through. Towards the top on the Pordoi. Much of this is done at around 8% gradient with perhaps the final 3km dropping to a more manageable 5%....

http://rideventures.blogspot.com/2016/05/autumn-epic-abbey-cwm-hir-climb.html
Sportives in mid-Wales and the West Midlands. Autumn Epic - Abbey-cwm-Hir climb. The Abbey climb comes at 47km and is the second proper challenge on the sportive. It's a long one snaking up the side of Camlo Hill (509m) and usually has a long line of cyclists toiling up it on the day. There's a tiny dip to give you a moments relief and then it continues on upwards at about 12% for another 700m of the road before easing toward the top. Total distance is 1,875m (Strava segment is much longer) and you w...

Sportives in mid-Wales and the West Midlands. Reviving the Devil Ride. After the success of the Autumn Epic. Sportive it seemed natural to take a look at bringing back it's brother event - the Devil Ride. This sportive has a more chequered history running from 2008 to 2012 with radical route changes during that time. I decided to have a look at the original:. So yesterday I spent the day driving around this route. Or rather I spent to whole morning trying to find a viable way out of Builth Wells. There's...

Guide to big hills in Shropshire for road cyclists. The Burway, Church Stretton. Asterton Bank, Long Mynd. Group ride from Church Stretton. Jiggers Bank, Ironbridge. Bufton's Bank, Church Stretton. A popular local climb with good roads and reasonable gradients. The Strava section starts immediately past this cottage and junction but the first half km or so is pretty flat. It starts going upwards from beside this white fence - but just 3% gradient. After the turning it's 8 to 10% for a good while. Basford...
