The End of Something(s) - Life in Lagos. The End of Something(s). Jun 7th, 2005 04:54 am. Float On" by Modest Mouse. So as Lagos opens the floodgates to wash away so many foreign faces for the summer, I, too, am in search of things familiar. I, too, am sloughing off the excess. And while doing so has been difficult, it’s given me newfound weightlessness. Six years later, I'm still paying off bills and wishing I had more time to write. But by the end of next school year, I will be debt-free and with a...

You never finish eating the meat of an elephant. African proverb, found here. They said, You can’t get an anthill on an eighth-acre for $100,000. Not up here, they said. This ain’t Texas, where you’re from, where there’s 1,000 miles of flatland in all directions and anywhere you look you can see over the horizon into etern...Trust...

Vintage Lonely Planet - Expats in Africa
http://expatsinafrica.livejournal.com/29417.html
VS Naipaul, A Bend in the River. Apr 1st, 2009 @ 10:32 pm. Crossposted from my LJ). I've discovered that going through old Lonely Planet travel guides can be fun. Yes, I'm a total nerd. Today, the second edition of Lonely Planet's Africa guide ("Africa On The Cheap" by Geoff Crowther) from 1980 arrived. Some interesting points of note. Crowther says Lagos, Nigeria is a hellhole, but that "if you are crazy, do not miss this place". Roads in Nigeria are "very good and most are sealed" and "journeys are...

Getting to know you - Expats in Africa
http://expatsinafrica.livejournal.com/28674.html
VS Naipaul, A Bend in the River. Feb 28th, 2009 @ 08:09 pm. Getting to know you. I met a friend of. S today, an online link-up based on the fact that we're both in Kinshasa. She's arrived only last month and plans to stay only about 6 months. I'm here for work, but not long term. We had an interesting conversation about the politics of being new in town, or, in my case, not new, but chronically temporary. In the end, though, what counts? February 28th, 2009 10:30 pm (UTC). I did have a couple of weekend ...

Michela Wrong's "It's Our Turn To Eat" - Expats in Africa
http://expatsinafrica.livejournal.com/29013.html
VS Naipaul, A Bend in the River. Mar 19th, 2009 @ 08:30 pm. Michela Wrong's "It's Our Turn To Eat". Has anyone else read Michela Wrong's "It's Our Turn To Eat" yet? I just started reading it the other day. I remember reading about Githongo's resignation and the Anglo Leasing scandal when it happened. I've also heard some criticisms of the book, but I'm more familiar with West African politics than I am with the other side of the continent. does anyone have any thoughts on it? I haven't read any books tha...

Has no opinion. On anything. Why are you even here? Reasons why the English language is so hard to learn:. 1) The bandage was wound around the wound. 2) The farm was used to produce produce. 3) The dump was so full that it had to refuse more refuse. 4) We must polish the Polish furniture. 5) He could lead if he would get the lead out. 6) The soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert. 7) Since there is no time like the present, he thought it was time to present the present. On the Road to the Cocoa Hills - Life in Lagos

On the Road to the Cocoa Hills - Life in Lagos. On the Road to the Cocoa Hills. Oct 3rd, 2005 12:23 am. Paid to Smile" by the Lemonheads. It is about the real modern Nigeria: an enormous, inchoate territory whose ancient. Units of tribe and religion are being supplanted by the new patterns of technology -above all, by the system of rough, weather-pitted roads along which thousands of ramshackle picturesquely named lorries speed goods and passengers. Which Heather recommended, thinking I’d have some quiet...
