Blogging Life from abroad: January 2010

http://robjkentjr.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html

Hello Marrakech, goodbye Africa. Robs Blog- Hello Marrakech, goodbye Africa. Hello Marrakech, goodbye Africa. This is actually the second time we were in Marrakech, the first being after we came out of the mountains, but I felt it was the perfect post to end our extraordinary journey.  Spending four days here it was nice to finally be back in a major city with all its cosmopolitan energy. The buzz, glow and smoke from the Djemaa el-Fna square food stands. The elaborate entryway at the Musée de Marrakech.

Rasa and I just wanted to send you a Merry Christmas wish.  We hope you have a great 2010 and we look forward to sharing a new adventure with you. Robs Blog- Fort Bou-Jerif. After leaving Western Sahara, we had more freedom to travel and explore the inland areas without a fear of finding landmines.  We decided to try an old French Foreign Legion fort in the high desert. Cactus is a major crop of the area and here is a local making the rounds with the help of their donkey. Robert J Kent Jr- robjkentjr@gma...

Ulan Bator, Mongolia ( 47.9022, 106.9162. During the day of main events, a group of us walked around the stadium area to watch the games.  Once we fought through the traffic jam at the entrance, it was just a short walk to all the colorful games that make up the heft of Mongolian culture. Blogging Life from abroad: Trans-Siberian Railroad

http://robjkentjr.blogspot.com/2011/02/trans-siberian-railroad.html

Erlian, China ( 43.671845, 111.977119. Sad to finally be leaving Mongolia, we boarded the Trans-Siberian Railroad to Beijing.  After another 24-hour train ride in much better conditions than Kazakhstan, we woke up in China to our train being lifted off the tracks so the wheels could be changed to ride on the Chinese rails. The trains were rather nice considering this was only a 2nd class compartment car. Here are the men running along with the wheels as they are pushed under the train. Environmental Reso...

Pure Water for the World: October 2007

http://purewaterfortheworld.blogspot.com/2007_10_01_archive.html

Pure Water for the World. Wednesday, October 24, 2007. After DC, we picked up the new volunteer and drove to Carolyns house in Vermont. There we were reminded what a family PWW is. Carolyn took us to the local market and besides looking at pumpkins and gourds, Rasa tried on some garlands. The hills were on fire with the fall leaves during this sunset after the storm. This picture doesnt do it justice though. Pumpkin carving was the highlight of my night. I made the big one with the carrot nose. We will n...

Pure Water for the World: August 2007

Pure Water for the World. Friday, August 24, 2007. The date is official! This hotel is where we will have our wedding on 10 May 2008. It is the Mena House Oberoi. In Cairo, Egypt ( 29° 59 3.91N, 31° 7 57.28E. Since 1869 it has hosted kings, emperors, heads of state, and celebrities; why not also our wedding guests? This is the dining room where we had the best breakfast in Egypt. We could have stayed there all morning and ate, actually we did. We formally invite anyone who is interested in coming. If...

Pure Water for the World: February 2007

http://purewaterfortheworld.blogspot.com/2007_02_01_archive.html

Pure Water for the World. Saturday, February 24, 2007. Week #28 - A long needed vacation, if only a weekend. First, we tried to load a filter up onto a horse, who wasnt too happy about this. We then decided to strap up a harness and carry it across the river. This part was the hardest part of delivering the filter. This was the last river we had to cross. From here it was just a matter of a small hill to reach the house. Here is the house, the bed is to the right and the stove left of the red dish basin.

Pure Water for the World. Wednesday, November 07, 2007. Göreme: The magic gnome village. In Göreme by 10am and exhausted by two nights in a moving seat, we slept in the most comfortable bed until 3pm. Home for two nights was the. Before leaving for Damascus, Syria. This is some of the scenery from a hike up SiviValley ( 38°3819.7N, 34°4958.1E. They call these the Pencil Chimneys. They kind of look like pencils, dont they? This is a gnome church. Pure Water for the World: September 2007

http://purewaterfortheworld.blogspot.com/2007_09_01_archive.html

Pure Water for the World. Wednesday, September 05, 2007. Well, it looks like the US press was worst hit by this latest storm because we had no wind, little rain and never lost water, electricity or phone. I have no idea where they were getting their reports from, unless they were in La Mosiquitia where Felix landed. Everyone I talked to from around Honduras also had the same mild weather as us here in La Ceiba. Just goes to show that you should not always trust what you see on TV. Links to this post.

Pure Water for the World. Monday, July 02, 2007. Week #45 - Finally Installing. Ive skipped week #44 because I am missing two pictures I need. I will post it when I return to California next week. With this entry I am about a month behind with my posts. We are currently on week #49. After some rough starts we finally got filters into some houses. We have been challenged to find sand that meets the new times from CAWST. 100 seconds per liter. The best part about working to 7pm is that I get to see some st...

Pure Water for the World: March 2007

http://purewaterfortheworld.blogspot.com/2007_03_01_archive.html

Pure Water for the World. Thursday, March 29, 2007. A special PWW moment in El Recreo. Installing 70 filters in our first community, we were exhausted by the end of the 4th day. We had only the most far flung, uphill homes remaining and we were ready to call it quits when we met Digna. Digna Dunia Marisol Martes, 17 months old on February 7, 2007. Our army of kids helping to carry whatever they could grab. The valiant group of porters passing through a stream trying not to trip. Links to this post. It's ...

Pure Water for the World: All roads lead to Damascus

http://purewaterfortheworld.blogspot.com/2007/11/all-roads-lead-to-damascus.html

Pure Water for the World. Sunday, November 18, 2007. All roads lead to Damascus. It took us 23 hours to get from Göreme to Damascus, most of it spent waiting around in bus stations during the four layovers we had. It was a scenic journey and the people on the bus took great care of us, making sure we found all of our connections and didnt go hungry. We figured it was going to be a great trip because our first bus to Kayseri was on Kent Bus lines. There are also many ruins just abandoned along the roadside.

Pure Water for the World: Istanbul (Not Constantinople)

http://purewaterfortheworld.blogspot.com/2007/11/istanbul-not-constantinople.html

Pure Water for the World. Thursday, November 01, 2007. We left New York on long 9-hour flight bound for Istanbul, Turkey. We arrived the next day at 8:30am and spent it in the city before an even longer 10-hour overnight bus to. Here we are at JFK with Rasas mom and our two bags, which by the way are the lightest they have ever been. We have effectively condensed our lives down to 45 lbs each. This is the bathing area for the Blue Mosque where people clean their feet and hands before entering. Robert Ken...
