Thursday, December 2, 2010. Stanley's Texting: "Lulu's Diry," from Marge's Little Lulu. I've meant to discuss the Lulu's Diry. Text pieces since I started this blog. So let's get it done, what say you? In order to classify for second class postal rates, which made subscriptions economically feasible, series comic books had to have at least two pages of typeset textual matter. T about these things. They had to be done. Who looked forward to them? Even the most entertainment-starved, bored persons might im...

Wednesday, June 30, 2010. Two Stories From The First Little Lulu. Comic, 1945: Story and Art by John Stanley. John Stanley's early work on the one-shot issues of Little Lulu. Has been dealt a bad hand in reprints. Aside from the appearance of one Stanley-drawn "Lulu" in The Smithsonian Book of Comic-Book Comics. None of these early stories- which amount to over 500 pages of story and art by Stanley- have been accurately reprinted. Another Rainbow's Little Lulu Library. There, I've said it.). Cannot affor...

http://stanleystories.blogspot.com/2010/07/last-of-little-lulu-pt-1-selections.html
Saturday, July 24, 2010. The Last of Little Lulu. Pt 1: selections from issue 132, 1959. 1959 was a pivotal year in John Stanley's comics career. He ended a 14-year relationship with Dell's best-selling Little Lulu. Comics franchise. He moved laterally into a recent Dell acquisition- Ernie Bushmiller's Zen comic strip Nancy. Stanley applied most of his Lulu. Formulae to the Nancy. Universe, with the added spin of a genuinely supernatural character (his own creation): Oona Goosepimple. S Pulp Paper Master...

Saturday, February 13, 2010. Killer, Not Filler- John Stanley's complete "Woody Woodpecker" gag pages of 1947 [updated 9-22-10]. Here is an appropriately red-hued bouquet of 18 comic-book roses from the pen and wit of John Stanley. At least one of these has appeared here before, but most of these are mega-sized scans from my copies of these old funnybooks. I left 'em large so you can savor Stanley's slick, sharp pen line and vivid cartooning. These were done around the same time of the only New Yorker.

Four of its nearly 800 pages contain an original essay I wrote on John Stanley. This is a phone-cam photo of the first two pages of the piece, which I wrote last fall, right before my life-saving move to Portland, Oregon. Frank M. Young.

STANLEY STORIES: Happy B'day Jim: O. G. Whiz, Pt. 2
http://stanleystories.blogspot.com/2009/01/happy-bday-jim-o-g-whiz-pt-2.html
Thursday, January 15, 2009. Happy B'day Jim: O. G. Whiz. For our 50th post, here's the second half of the first issue of O. G. Whiz. John Stanley's last original work for comics. A Short Happy Life" is a bittersweet story with a cynical, satirical bent that reminds me of Gilbert Shelton's best work. There are faint echoes from Little Lulu. S world in this story, but the outrageous corporate actions of the Tikkletoy Company steal the show here. A SHORT HAPPY LIFE. Our last O. G. Whiz. Cultural stereotypes...

Monday, June 10, 2013. Running on Sheer Chutzpah: Little Lulu. Four-Color One-Shot 158, 1947. This is the only Lulu. Thank goodness, I'll spare you a look at my version- these are top-drawer scans done by some anonymous kind soul a few years ago. These early Little Lulu. S suffer terribly when seen in black and...
