RunnerByNight

Friday, April 8, 2011. I was not in a good place from the start. I was toeing the line and viewing the race as another item to cross off the list. I’ve always been a bit of an over-achiever, but the balancing act of writing my dissertation, finishing out experiments (which never seem to end) and submitting papers, finding a job, selling the condo, attempting to be a supportive husband to my expecting wife, and training for a race was pushing the limit. Six miles into the race, I was miserable. Early on I...

RunnerByNight: August 2010

http://runnerbynight.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html

Wednesday, August 25, 2010. My wife told me I need more creative prose. My PhD advisor told me to be more direct. Ah, the life of the man caught in the middle. It’s funny how life becomes so segmented…. I logged a lot of solo miles this week – all except Thursday’s mile repeats with Steve (and I’ll complain about that later) and ten miles with Star on Sunday. I’ve spent so many miles with others lately that I had forgotten how much I enjoy being alone on the trails with my thoughts. It felt strangely fam...

RunnerByNight: Excerpts on the Erie Marathon

http://runnerbynight.blogspot.com/2010/09/excepts-on-erie-marathon.html

Wednesday, September 29, 2010. Excerpts on the Erie Marathon. The Erie Marathon felt a bit more like an ultra-event than a typical road marathon. The field is small and spectators sparse. The course winds through beautiful forests and along open sand beaches. The aid stations had Hammer products. And the results are still not posted. Although this was my first marathon without a new PR (but what did I expect with all the Grindstone training? September 29, 2010 at 7:31 AM. Sir Walks-a-Lot's "Slog Blog".

Talking to Trees: February 2011

http://starstrees.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html

Thoughts on Eating Dirt, Playing with Nature, and Pounding Pavement (Once in Awhile). Monday, February 28, 2011. Welcome Back, Cupcake. I believe in God. Lately, I've wondered if he cared. I saw an olive branch yesterday. I also got my heart broken. My mother had this tradition when we were growing up. Every Christmas, we received one gift that wasn't on our Christmas list. She said she did it for us because her dad always did it for her. It was supposed to be the. Yesterday I had to teach the lillies of...

Thoughts on Eating Dirt, Playing with Nature, and Pounding Pavement (Once in Awhile). Saturday, September 10, 2011. Woodstock: Lessons Learned From a 50K in Hell. I'm not a fan of desperation. I got a firm slap on the wrist this weekend reminding me why. But not strong enough. And then I rationalized that since I had recovered more quickly than usual from Burning River (in terms of soreness), I must not have used too much up in the legs, and if I could get my head around another 100, I would be okay.

Talking to Trees: Dear Office

http://starstrees.blogspot.com/2011/11/dear-office.html

Thoughts on Eating Dirt, Playing with Nature, and Pounding Pavement (Once in Awhile). Sunday, November 13, 2011. You suck. And it's really not your fault, it's just how it is. I have avoided you for the past year. It hasn't worked at all, I always knew you were there, right across the hall, trashed. I used you like a garbage can, like a dumpster, just threw anything and everything non-perishable behind your door and slammed it shut. I thought again about the quiet toll that infertility takes on us; how I...

Talking to Trees: Shout.

Thoughts on Eating Dirt, Playing with Nature, and Pounding Pavement (Once in Awhile). Tuesday, October 4, 2011. For those of you that follow offline (or off Facebook), just wanted to check in. I am in deep, dark pain. There's this super pretty, really happy blog coming about the Akron Marathon . I'm hoping to have time to finish it on a flight later this week. It sucks that I couldn't finish it while I was still. Just stuck in my throat. Don't feel sorry for me. I'm blessed, and I'm grateful. But...Uggh ...

Talking to Trees: June 2011

http://starstrees.blogspot.com/2011_06_01_archive.html

Thoughts on Eating Dirt, Playing with Nature, and Pounding Pavement (Once in Awhile). Monday, June 27, 2011. Method Acting at Western States. I don’t remember how it came up, but for some reason late in the race, Steve and I were discussing the evolution of self over the twenties and thirties. After some reflection, I concluded that (for me) the twenties were about self-discovery, and the thirties about self-acceptance. A Long Day’s Night. I had purposely gotten up early on Friday morning, planning to ti...

Thoughts on Eating Dirt, Playing with Nature, and Pounding Pavement (Once in Awhile). Friday, April 20, 2012. When One Door Closes (The End of an Era). Cupcake's back in a big way. But this post is brief. I know that's not very Cupcake-like, but it's good to surprise people once in awhile. Then they talked about STRONGER meds or INCREASING my doses once the cysts went away, which they'll do on their own. We rejected that bid. And now, we move on. My most sincere thanks for the continued support throughou...

Run Mikey P: A Quick Grindstone Recap

http://runmikeyp.blogspot.com/2010/10/quick-grindstone-recap.html

Tuesday, October 5, 2010. A Quick Grindstone Recap. Shout outs to the other Ohio runners that represented so well at Grindstone - it turned out that I was the only person who had a bad day. In order of placing here's how the other runners faired (times are approximantions as results are not posted). Sandy Nypaver dominated the womens race winning by nearly 4 hours (23:05 if I'm not mistaken), setting a new course record! Dave now has one race to complete the Beast Series, the Hellgate 100k . Talking to Trees: March 2011

http://starstrees.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html

Thoughts on Eating Dirt, Playing with Nature, and Pounding Pavement (Once in Awhile). Monday, March 7, 2011. Friday didn't count except for keeping the legs tired. I run 10 or more miles in a day quite regularly, even on reduced mileage; however, the legs were already quite tired just from the jump from 50 weekly miles to 80, plus the return of twice daily workouts. I took it easy and hunkered down for the real Skinny. Then came the hard part. And so too it was on 71 that morning. After a mild spinou...

runnerbyaccident | Thoughts on running, exercising and fueling for it all from a semi-newbie runner in New York City

Thoughts on running, exercising and fueling for it all from a semi-newbie runner in New York City. Back on my Feet. It’s been a long time since I ran in a race and even longer since I ran with a time goal in mind. This past weekend I had an opportunity to scratch that itch at the Run as One 4 mile race. And 36 hours later I am still riding the high. On Saturday, I was texting with my friend Beth. As we ran the first mile, which included Cat Hill I knew I was going to have to push myself to keep up this p...
