Cornish Woodland Workshop: Spooning

http://cornishwoodlandworkshop.blogspot.com/2013/08/spooning.html

An occasional journal about wood, willow and craft. Tuesday, 20 August 2013. I find that my spoon-carving is like many things in life. My enthusiasm for it comes and goes for no particularly obvious reason, but I find myself having times of almost no carving, followed by periods of intense whittling and playing around with forms and ideas. All sorts of things might prompt a period of carving, a new tool, finding some interesting wood, or even just sitting round a fire. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Cornish Woodland Workshop: Batten and shingles

http://cornishwoodlandworkshop.blogspot.com/2012/11/batten-and-shingles.html

An occasional journal about wood, willow and craft. Sunday, 11 November 2012. Autumn is truly here and the leaves are falling, so its time to get the roof covered, starting with nailing down battens and making shingles. The rafters and batten are cut from local larch by Jo sawmills, and they gave us some really nice stuff. 4"x 3" rafters and 2 x1" batten. You make footholds as you go. The ends get trimmed evenly once all is nailed down. We cross-cut the bolts to the required length, then split them down ...

Cornish Woodland Workshop: July 2011

http://cornishwoodlandworkshop.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html

An occasional journal about wood, willow and craft. Thursday, 14 July 2011. Our first spoon workshop was run successfully on the 7th - 8th July with very agreeable weather for most of it. It was a real pleasure to sit down or a few days and explore the skills and techniques used in traditional Swedish carving. Its great to see a small group of people slowly become more and more absorbed into crafting something by hand with simple tools. Conversation slows and life is temporarily given to the relaxed ...

Cornish Woodland Workshop: April 2011

http://cornishwoodlandworkshop.blogspot.com/2011_04_01_archive.html

An occasional journal about wood, willow and craft. Friday, 15 April 2011. The new woodland workshop 2011. The idea for the woodland workshop has been germinating for a few years now. We have both been practicing and teaching wood and withy crafts for ten years or so now, and we always felt it would be great if we could move what we do into a woodland environment. Watch this space for updates and images of how we are progressing, as well as info on new courses etc. Wednesday, 13 April 2011. We are offeri...

Cornish Woodland Workshop: May 2013

http://cornishwoodlandworkshop.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html

An occasional journal about wood, willow and craft. Sunday, 5 May 2013. Not done a great deal of work on the barn roof over this long, wet and cold winter; certainly not as much as we had planned, but today was a beautifully warm and sunny May day and we are starting to make real progress on one side of the roof. Over the winter we felled a really nice straight grained, knot free sweet-chestnut that should hopefully provide us with all the good quality stuff we need to complete the roof. While the team g...

Cornish Woodland Workshop: May 2011

http://cornishwoodlandworkshop.blogspot.com/2011_05_01_archive.html

An occasional journal about wood, willow and craft. Thursday, 19 May 2011. Monday, 16 May 2011. One of the nicest things to do with green wood is (in my opinion) the making of chairs. Strong, light, beautiful, functional; many of the characteristics a craftsperson aims for can all be seen in a well made chair. Why work wood green? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).
