The first labor of Hercules was to slay the Nemean Lion for king Eurystheus. Finding the beast impervious to arrows, he trapped it in it’s lair and strangled it to death with his bare hands. Watercolor, gouache, graphite on paper, 24″ x 18″, 2012. First he cleared the grove of Zeus of a lion, and put its skin upon his back, hiding his yellow hair in its fearful tawny gaping jaws.
