Miss Isobel Smail worked in the family shop on leaving school, volunteered in 1939 for service with the Northumberland Fusiliers and the Durham Light Infantry at Brancepth Castle. She was the granddaughter of John Smail, who came from Kelso in the 1890s to set up John Smail and Co. at 40 Bridge Street, selling ironware and many other goods. Then and Now Morpeth. The Trail - Wheatsheaf. On passing a newly opened bakery on Newgate Street, another angry trader described how Miss D’Jeck had destroyed her bread display and ruined her shop door!

Market Place

King John granted a charter for Morpeth’s weekly market in 1199. By the late eighteenth century it was said to be the biggest ‘fat market’ outside Smithfield in London. Cattle and sheep were driven by drovers, in their thousands, from North Northumberland and from over the Scottish border. Market Place, Morpeth. (c.1850). Market Place, Morpeth. (c.1911).

High Stanners

High Stanners is an area of Morpeth that includes an ancient riverside walk along the River Wansbeck and traditionally where the Victorian circuses would pitch. Swings at High Stanners. View of High Stanners and the River Wansbeck. Pierrot Show at High Stanners. On the banks of the river a little girl is having a tea party with her teddies. It seems Miss D’Jeck has been having a lovely time playing in the river, as everyone has been chasing around trying to find her. Where is she now.

Horse’s Entry

A narrow alleyway from Newgate Street, intersecting with Old Post Office Yard. The name appears on a map of Morpeth dating from 1826. Farmers and those attending the market would unharness their horses and leave wheeled vehicles in the street. The horses would be taken to inn stables. Schoolboys coming in from the country would stable their ponies for the day.
