Tuesday, August 15, 2006. How many languages do you speak? That's the question that linguists get all the time, and of course, it's meaningless in the way people mean it. Often we linguists are analyzing and studying languages that we don't know well- that we sometimes don't even speak. It brought back a question that Camille, my oldest, asked me one night driving in the car. "Dad, how many languages have you worked with? So, to reprise. The next year, I took French. Saturday, September 17, 2005. Just today, I ran across a copy of a letter I'd written in August of 1995 soon after we'd moved here to Tucson. It was one of the hottest summers on record for this area. I thought you might enjoy a few paragraphs from it. The felt tip drawing of a saguaro cactus above, was a doodle that I'd made down near my signature on the letter. Welcome to the Sonoran Desert! Posted by Dale Savage at 9:05 AM. 7:34 PM, October 08, 2005. I tried visiting your blog, but didn't get past the...

SavageLit: October 2005

Monday, October 17, 2005. True appreciation of everything another is is always rooted in everyday reality. That includes the depths of sensual love. Today there was mention of flour flying (you know who you are), and it drew me to memory of a favorite poem- and a favorite image. The image in Neruda's sonnet is made sweeter by drawing in thoughts of domesticity. (It was written to his wife, Matilde Urrutia). The wonder of love is that we ordinary mortals touch the universe through one another. Remaining i...

Thursday, May 29, 2008. Basil and Mint Sorbet. My youngest daughter, Christina, emailed today asking for the recipe for Basil and Mint Sorbet. I picked this up a few years ago while reading the book, Under the Tuscan Sun. It is a delightful summer dessert or palate cleanser between courses. It has the added benefit of being extremely easy. Basil and Mint Sorbet. 1/2 cup mint leaves. 1/2 cup basil leaves. 2 cups water, divided. 1 tbs lemon juice. NY: Broadway Books, p. 129. Posted by Dale Savage @ 8:36 PM.

Sunday, September 25, 2005. Jalapeño-Dark Chocolate Ice Cream, White Chocolate Sauce, Candied Pecans. No matter what you are thinking right now, this is a dish that will knock your socks off! The marriage of chiles to chocolate goes all the way back to the ancient Mayans and survives in Central American and Southern Mexican cooking to this day in classic dishes such as Oaxacan Mole Negro. We first made this one Sunday afternoon while watching the movie,. A perfect pairing of food and movie! The white cho...

Culinary Savagery: November 2005

Saturday, November 26, 2005. I first had Norwegian Pepper Cookies in the jungles of the southern Philippines around Christmas time in 1982. One of my very best friends and a collaborator in surveying some of the ethnic languages of the island of Mindanao, was Dag Wendel, a tall slender good humored Norwegian. Dag and I were a real Mutt and Jeff pair as we made our way in and out of some very remote tribal areas. Yield: about 5 dozen. 1 1/8 cups butter. 1 cup white sugar. 1/4 cup heavy whipping cream.
