It was not until some five years into his ministry that he listened to some Quakers preaching. That experience aroused his spiritual consciousness and influenced him for the rest of his life. This was not his first meeting with Quakers. When he worked in Liverpool, he lodged with Dr James Currie (the first biographer of the poet Robert Burns). It was the wish of the Rev Henry Duncan to do something of real and lasting value for the under-privileged that led to the beginning of his savings bank movement. Dr Henry Duncan was minister of the parish church in Ruthwell for nearly 50 years. He became Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, as well as a leading light in the Disruption of 1843. He restored the magnificent Ruthwell Cross, which is arguably the most discussed medieval monument in western europe. The late seventh or early eighth century Ruthwell Cross is one of the finest Anglo-Saxon crosses in Britain and has now been restored to its rightful place in Ruthwell Church.

The Museum houses a collection of early home safes, coins and bank notes from many parts of the world, including the first three lock box used in the Ruthwell Parish Bank. As well as bank memorabilia and records, the collection traces the life of the Rev Henry Duncan, the 'Father' of Savings Banks, demonstrating his many interests and accomplishments. A quarter-size model of the Ruthwell Cross, which he carved from beeswax, is prominently displayed. Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge.
