Scotsburn - the reclamation of a walled garden

Scotsburn - the reclamation of a walled garden. Wednesday, 16 April 2014. Update Mid April 2014. Yet again, time got away from me and so I have quite a bit to update this time round. The dahlia tubers that we wish to take cuttings from have all been planted up in the greenhouse bed and I should be able to start taking cuttings tomorrow. There are also 18 strawberry runners waiting to go out, and the 50 or so gladioli corms have been cleaned and set to chit. Now, more news. The garden has had rabbit n...

Scotsburn - the reclamation of a walled garden: Hare today, gone soon (I Hope)

http://scotsburngarden.blogspot.com/2013/06/hare-today-gone-soon-i-hope.html

Scotsburn - the reclamation of a walled garden. Thursday, 20 June 2013. Hare today, gone soon (I Hope). Well, the ongoing hare problem continues - so far the score is hare - lots, plants - nil. Not content with chowing down on the phlox, sea holly and heliopsis last week, this week he has nipped the tops off most of the onion sets, the chives, a lot of the cosmos, a couple of young hemerocallis - he has even had a nibble at rhe gladioli leaves. So anyway, on with what was accomplished today. Live about 3...

Scotsburn - the reclamation of a walled garden: Garden Update July 2013

Scotsburn - the reclamation of a walled garden. Sunday, 28 July 2013. Garden Update July 2013. The perennials bucket was filled with Campanula, Peruvian lilies, Valerian (red and white varieties), Echinops, Sea Holly, Alchemilla, Astrantia (three varieties), Achillea (mixture of Summer Pastel), Shasta Daisy and Scabious. Here are a couple of pics of our entries. The lupins, both in the herbaceous borders and those of the Lupin Wall have been deadheaded religiously and we await a second flush - there were...

Scotsburn - the reclamation of a walled garden. Sunday, 28 October 2012. Sorry for the lack of updates recently but there hasn't been too much to report due to weather and just mundane jobs being done. On the subject of the weather, Friday just past was quire a busy day. So what else is going on - I've started putting the borders to bed for the winter now, cutting down most of the perennials, and will be starting to cut back the climbing roses next week. Friday, 5 October 2012. So it doesn't look like we...

Scotsburn - the reclamation of a walled garden. Tuesday, 25 September 2012. Today was wet - no, more than wet, bloody wet - and windy too, very windy - not really a very nice day to be working outside - not that weve had too many really nice days this year. Anyway, after watering the plants in tjhe greenhouse and potting up some small white Narcissi and some Crocosmia Lucifer corms, it was back outside into the rain. Wednesday, 19 September 2012. Started the day today by finishing pricking out the best o...

Dave the Gardener: August 2012

http://davethegardener.blogspot.com/2012_08_01_archive.html

Friday, 31 August 2012. Fangs for the memory. I'm off to Alness Show tomorrow so this evening I went to pull the last barrel of parsnips to try and get a set of three. Can you imagine how I felt when the first and third ones I pulled came out looking like this? Thankfully the other three gave me a set - not the best but they'll look okay on the bench. Tuesday, 28 August 2012. My mate Simon has a lot of strawberries in his p/tunnel and I got a call saying to come and help myself as he had too many! I did ...

Sunday, 22 July 2012. Top Tray won by Wattie McBeath from The Doll. And I got a second for this vase (alright I used a bucket! Of garden flowers - all from Scotsburn Garden, the subject of my other blog, where I work on Tuesdays. Thought I'd post pics of some of the things growing at Ballone Castle in the courtyard garden at the moment. Outside we have some pretty impressive cardoon thistles that are between 7 and 8 ft tall and almost ready to produce their lovely purple flowers. Tuesday, 17 July 2012.

Dave the Gardener: Tattie Time

http://davethegardener.blogspot.com/2012/08/tattie-time.html

Sunday, 12 August 2012. With the local show only a week ago, I took the time today to go through my show tatties and try and get some sort of order before I make my final selection and washand clean them on Thursday night in preparation for the bench. I cut the shaws (haulms if you live in the south) off last week and the bags have been left for a week to help the skins to set on the tatties. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Dave the Gardener: Alness Show 2012

http://davethegardener.blogspot.com/2012/09/alness-show-2012.html

Monday, 3 September 2012. Runner Beans, (though there were a couple of iffy ones on my board if I do say so myself). And long beetroot.- which i somehow managed to miss taking a photo of. I also won a red card for Sweet Peas (which I entered and staged on behalf of Scotsburn Garden - see my other blog). That's our entry at the rear (12 blooms). I got blue cards for my parsnips (I did manage to get three that were okay), my potatoes (coloured) and my cauliflower. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Dave the Gardener: March 2012

http://davethegardener.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html

Sunday, 11 March 2012. With Maggie off running the Inverness Half Marathon today, I got back out into the garden to get some more jobs done as it's getting close to that manic time of year. After topping up and levelling all the barrels, I cored out the two for the parsnips and filled them with the mix. That leaves me three for my long carrots (though I may be tempted to have two for long carrots and one for long beets. After messing about with my "fussy veg" ( a term coined by my daughter) I started bac...

Dave the Gardener: Strawberry Glut

http://davethegardener.blogspot.com/2012/08/strawberry-glut.html

Tuesday, 28 August 2012. My mate Simon has a lot of strawberries in his p/tunnel and I got a call saying to come and help myself as he had too many! So yesterday evening I went over with the girls to p[ick a few. Well the girls abandoned me in favour of playing with the Wii, so I picked two large bowls - approx 8lbs. And tonight I have made a large batch of "no cook" strawberry jam and started two batches of Strawberry Gin which should be ready for the festive season. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Dave the Gardener: September 2011

http://davethegardener.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 14 September 2011. If you go down to the woods today. You better not get in my way! Sunday, 11 September 2011. Polytunnel wind up and wind down. I went back out with Niamh (3 year old daughter / princess) this afternoon where we picked another huge pile of tomatoes, completely defoliating the plants as we went, to let those fruits still to ripen do so a wee bit quicker. We also picked the very last of the calabrese, a savoy cabbage, runner beans and some bell peppers. The pot baside each Marro...

Dave the Gardener: September 2012

http://davethegardener.blogspot.com/2012_09_01_archive.html

Thursday, 6 September 2012. Here is this years batch of Spitfire Sauce - I usually have enough to make over 100 jars which I sell locally but due to lack of polytunnel this year, my chilli production has been seriously reduced. However, there are approximately 250 big red cayenne peppers in this batch - seeds'n'all. Monday, 3 September 2012. Runner Beans, (though there were a couple of iffy ones on my board if I do say so myself). And long beetroot.- which i somehow managed to miss taking a photo of.

A Gardeners Blog

Http:/ www.scotsburn.biz. Friday, July 17, 2015. Great garden colour for Winter and Early Spring. Ranunculus Mache. Just a classic herbaceous Perennial. This is one of the first buds showing but the rest of the plants now consistently have buds forming under the foliage. The flowering season for Ranunculus is short, sharp and dramatic so now is the time to get them on display so you can enjoy the full beauty of these flowers and they develop and peak. Thanks for your support. Monday, June 8, 2015. Throug...
