Friday, 8 May 2009. The F conspiracy - Thanks Nico! Since he was born Jim had always hated fish. He hated the way they looked, smelled and tasted. He thought fish shouldn’t be here, he thought that the fish were up to something. Everyone thought he was just being silly, but he had thought how fish could take over the world. They wouldn’t be able to breath on the surface. AND then it came to him! Then the glass cracked. Posted by Lenzie Academy. 10 May 2009 at 08:33. Oh, how. imaginative? Try this for a c...

Scottish Language - Gaelic and Lallans
http://clans.org.uk/lang.html
Links at page end. At present, in the Western Isles Gaelic speakers account for around 70 per cent of the population. This is the modern homeland of Gaelic. Figures elsewhere are much lower - Grampian 0.5 percent, Highland 7.4 percent, Strathclyde 0.8 percent, Orkney 0.4 percent, Shetland 0.4 percent, and so on. Even Highland - less than 1 in 10 is a Gaelic speaker. So it is that Scotland has always had more than one language, although the romantics like to hark back to a purely Gaelic period which never...

Things I've learned. A place to park stray thoughts. Wednesday, 23 November 2011. Ian Jack, ‘The Country Formerly Known as Great Britain. Writings 1989-2009’. Jack is a writer with a coherent vision, a commitment to the values of a lost world, the Great Britain of the late Victorian era and the first half of the early 20. Some of the reminiscence in the book is rather commonplace – the details of the past that we are invited to savour are often the same ones that anybody of a certain age would reca...

Things I've learned. A place to park stray thoughts. Saturday, 10 December 2011. Nicholas Shaxson ‘Treasure Islands. Tax Havens and the Men who Stole the World’ (2011). What did I learn from this? When I stopped whimpering and came out of the wardrobe, I guess I could say I learned pretty much what it says on the back cover:. Tax havens have declared war on honest, law-abiding people around the world. Wealthy individuals hold over ten trillion dollars offshore. Can anything be done? As it is, governments...
