I1 pod - I1 matriline. I1 pod is one of the least commonly encountered northern residents groups. It appears to spend more time off northern and western Vancouver Island and along the north coast of BC than in the more frequently surveyed waters of Johnstone Strait. The matriarch, I1, died in 1993, but in keeping with matriline naming protocol, her name is retained because she still has surviving offspring of both sexes. More photosets at the photo gallery. D1 pod - D11 matriline. D1 pod was once quite common in Johnstone Strait but only occasionally visited this area during the 1990s. The two matrilines, D11 and D7, typically travel together. Source: Killer Whales Second edition. D11 matriline consist of 4 whales and 3 generations. The matriline D11, Christie had four calves. The first calf, D14 was born in 1987, but died in 2007. Ripple had two calfs, A63 which died in the same year 1994 when it was born and Midsummer, A69, born in 1969. The repertoire of the A5 pod consists of the following 13 discrete calls: N2, N3, N4, N5i, N7i, N7ii, N8i, N9iii, N10, N11i, N12, N13, and N17. The calls N9iii, and N17 are exclusive for A5 pod.
