The other day I was scanning headlines and came across an interesting item: earnings are suffering. In hopes that it could become China’s biggest chocolate player. Was this just another case of China’s souring economy dragging down another venerable American company. And so the consequence that sales in 2015 are US...

The personal blog of Adam Minter, author of JUNKYARD PLANET. Skip to primary content. The More Things Change in China – Hershey’s Chocolate Edition. 13 August, 2015. The other day I was scanning headlines and came across an interesting item: earnings are suffering. At Hershey’s chocolate due to a disappointing China performance. That’s not how it was supposed to work out: back in 2013 Hershey, in an expansionist mood, acquired candy maker Shanghai Golden Money for $584 million. And so the consequence tha...

AN OBSERVATION OF LIFE'S OVERLAPS. Wednesday, October 13, 2010. Humanity to the Rescue. Photo Courtesy of MSN.com. I wanted to put down my thoughts about a story that has been saturating the news waves yesterday and today. 33 Chilean miners have finally been rescued after 69 days underground. 69 days! Can you imagine the mental warfare your mind must be having with itself to get you through that? What would I want to do if given another chance to live? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). AN OBSERVATION OF LIFE'S OVERLAPS. Thursday, August 4, 2011. This is my street, Y ong Kang Lu. Which translates to literally Road of Eternal Health. It's a densely packed strip of the French Concession which is half new development and half older infrastructure. To my favor, one of the better Cantonese restaurants in town is right on this strip. This is Yi Sheng Yue Wei. Or also known as Eason Restaurant. Across the street, naturally! Here is Yi Sheng Jou Xiang. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). I think it's o...

Encountered on the staircase outside the shops at the Portman Ritz Carlton Shanghai Center. Evidence #2: Four out of five weekdays in Shanghai are ' Ladies' Night'. Where Ladies drink absolutely. AN OBSERVATION OF LIFE'S OVERLAPS. Sunday, November 28, 2010. One Way Ticket to Shanghai (back-logged from 10/28). Hello, sorry for the over-due post. This is why I suppose, I am not paid to blog, write, or report in any manner; because I am not punctual. At any rate, it's important that I back-log my post to October 28th one month ago almost exactly because that was d-day when this whole journey began. AN OBSERVATION OF LIFE'S OVERLAPS. Friday, February 4, 2011. Home for the Holidays. I was going to make it home for the holidays (Chinese Lunar New Year) after all, but so where a ton of other Asians. AN OBSERVATION OF LIFE'S OVERLAPS. Tuesday, March 22, 2011. Culture Chanel Exhibit; MOCA Shanghai. I always find it interesting to go in to the minds of other designers to discover their influences and inspirations. It does not take much to affect a designer and especially after the John Galliano and Alexander McQueen incidents of late, demonstrate that we are " fragile artistic creatures. Below are some of my favorites:. Karl Lagerfeld "Coromandel" coat inspired by Chinese screens 1996-1997 Fall/Winter.

AN OBSERVATION OF LIFE'S OVERLAPS. Monday, August 30, 2010. A Change of Pace. Being back home in the US is great, although oddly disenchanting. Sometimes I feel like someone that knows a secret she isn't supposed to tell. How do you return to ordinary life after having experienced something more? I don't want to resume business as usual. How do I maintain what I've learned? Thursday, August 26, 2010. Open-air cafe near Beixinqiao. Rebecca and I at Beidaihe. Three of my students are going to study abroad&...
