Why we were set up. Support or join us. What does Sheringham Coastwatch do? Much of the traffic that passes the Watch tower consists of large commercial vessels but we also watch over the many crab boats and small fishing boats that work in our area. We also observe the dive boats, jet skiers, the wind surfers, board riders and swimmers. The Coastwatch station is equipped with telephone, radar, a VHF radio, powerful telescope and binoculars all of which we use when keeping our watch. Our role is to:.

Sheringham Coastwatch, on the North Norfolk coast, is one of a number of Coastal Surveillance Stations set up to keep a visual and radio watch around the coast of Great Britain. It is a member of THE SEA SAFETY GROUP UK. Which is a registered charity set up to promote safety at sea. Sheringham Coastwatch operates from the Old Coastguard Lookout (the Watch tower) on Skelding Hill, the highest point of Sheringham Golf Club.

Why we were set up. Support or join us. Why was Sheringham Coastwatch set up? Sheringham Coastwatch was started in 1997, sometime after HM Coastguard stopped using the Skelding Hill Lookout to maintain a visual watch. In 1994 the Coastguard closed its last local station which was used to keep visual watch. Now on the east coast of England there is only one manned Coastguard Rescue Co-ordination Centre- Humber. The Centre does not keep a visual watch.

Why we were set up. Support or join us. Where is Sheringham Coastwatch? 52 567' N 001 12.0' E. Sheringham Coastwatch operates from the Old Coastguard Lookout (The Watch tower) on Skelding Hill, Sheringham. Skelding Hill is between Sheringham Golf Club and the sea and is on the edge of the cliff. This location, 170 feet above sea level, gives us a commanding view extending (weather permitting) to over 14 miles out to sea.

Why we were set up. Support or join us. If you are over the age of 18, are able to give up a few hours of your time each week and would like to help to keep sailors, cliff and beach users safe, why not join us? You will be thoroughly trained by one of our experienced members. Once trained you will be able to take one of the watches (2-3 hours) and have the satisfaction of knowing you are helping to keep people safe. Additionally you will have the pleasure of one of the very best views in North Norfolk!
