Sifter Goes (Bike) Riding

Sifter Goes (Bike) Riding. Saturday, June 20, 2015. This morning, SH1 was closed after heavy rain washed out a bridge, and today's road race at Te Horo was officially off the menu. I was in two minds about it anyway - while I was looking forward to an opportunity to get on my "race bike", the weary legs of Thursday evening were probably still hanging around, and I didn't want to dig myself into a hole. A swollen Hutt River north of Silverstream Bridge. Summit of the Rimutakas. Or something from 2010.

Sifter Goes (Bike) Riding: February 2015

http://sifter-writes-bikes.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html

Sifter Goes (Bike) Riding. Sunday, February 1, 2015. Last year, both Khulan and Kaitlyn rode the Karapoti Challenge, finishing first and second in the U19 women's grade respectively. This was not Kaitlyn's first involvement in that event - she and I set the so-far enduring tandem record. As I alluded recently. Khulie's worked damn hard on the bike since, and despite that, I was surprised a few weeks ago when she said she might like to give the Karapoti Classic race a go. Er, OK. We headed up that wee gem...

Sifter Goes (Bike) Riding. Wednesday, May 20, 2015. 2015 Metlink City Safari. It doesn't happen very often, but every now and then, I do something physical that doesn't involve a bike. Usually, this leaves me feeling beaten up, and that little bit more impressed with the amazing invention that is the bicycle. Most of the time, despite the pain, I'm pleased to have subjected my body to its current distress. An event that ticks all the boxes is the City Safari. And the event in 2011. After loading my back-...

Sifter Goes (Bike) Riding: June 2013

http://sifter-writes-bikes.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html

Sifter Goes (Bike) Riding. Sunday, June 30, 2013. Week 3, oui! My third road week started with breakfast surrounded by Russian teenagers, on a school trip to Nimes and the surrounding area, I'd guess. As with the previous day, today I'd just be cycle touring, and didn't actually have that far to cover. I was looking forward to seeing the Pont du Gard, an old Roman aqueduct, and was a bit surprised when my GPS bleated that I'd missed a turn. At least a lot of it was downhill! This day too was beautiful, b...

Sifter Goes (Bike) Riding: April 2014

http://sifter-writes-bikes.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html

Sifter Goes (Bike) Riding. Thursday, April 24, 2014. Losing my appetite at the PNP Easter Tour. I do remember feeling quite excited when I first saw confirmation of the 2014 PNP Easter Tour. I'd really enjoyed the 2013 edition. And that had been a great stepping stone towards my cycle tour in France - five hard stages in three days. What's not to love? Had been a solid 150-minute time trial, and I knew my form wasn't terrible. But, I also knew I wasn't in the shape I'd been the year before. The plan for ...

ScaredyCat....... Endurance Bike Rider: Scott 24 hour...

http://scaredycatthebikerider.blogspot.com/2012/12/scott-24-hour-finally.html

ScaredyCat. Endurance Bike Rider. Event and Rides Slideshow. Thursday, 13 December 2012. Amazing how time just sneaks past. One day I had plenty of time to prepare for the Scott 24 hr and associated travelling, the next day it was time to pack up and go! As usual I totally over-packed, with plenty of ‘just-in-case’ clothing and other items! I had a pile of lists to tick off and was still panicking about what I might have forgotten! The next day was cold, but fine. Time to get out and attack both laps!

Latin American misadventures.: October 2011

http://haywardinsa.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html

A little record of my time in the continent of South America. Tuesday, October 25, 2011. I headed out to Lake Titicaca fairly quickly after arriving in La Paz. The drive was scenic and the actual lake startlingly impressive. It is the largest high altitude in the world and with good reason as it looks like an ocean to the uninformed – you cannot see anywhere close to across the thing. South end of Isla del Sol. Monday, October 24, 2011. It has to be said up front that Sucre is an exceptionally beautiful ...

ScaredyCat. Endurance Bike Rider. Event and Rides Slideshow. Thursday, 24 May 2012. Moonride 2012. a long and muddy day at the office. I still had plenty of time to get myself organised at a relaxed pace. I got the chance to catch up with the second member of my crew, the amazing Charlotte – awesome endurance cyclist and good friend. I headed out for a lap of the course to see what I was in for – it was a little damp, but nothing that I thought would cause problems (ha – little did I know! I’d miss...

A little record of my time in the continent of South America. Monday, January 30, 2012. Volunteering at PSF, part three. There is another side to PSF as well, which is an integral part of the experience. I’m talking about the social elements. The people around you have a huge bearing on your life so the communal side of things has a big bearing on the experience you have. I had an incredible experience and much of the credit goes to the people I was working and living with. Upon arrival we checked into t...

http://haywardinsa.blogspot.com/2011_05_01_archive.html

A little record of my time in the continent of South America. Tuesday, May 24, 2011. Thoughts from two months in. My days are fairly repetitive. At 7:45 I wake up. It’s dark. I eat oats and toast and drink coffee. No one talks much. I write a 10 minute email, brush my teeth and get my gear together. By 8.30 we are heading to the river to cross. Crossings range from calf to waist deep and vary in temp from tolerable to glacial. The moon was still cranking after I arrived at work. Sunday, May 22, 2011.
