Diagnostic Peritoneal Lavage (DPL). Diagnostic Peritoneal Lavage (DPL) is performed when intra-abdominal bleeding secondary to trauma is suspected. The procedure is performed when alternative diagnostic methods such as computerized tomography (CT) or ultrasound imaging are unavailable, or when the patient’s condition does not allow them to be performed. Is used to simulate surgical instrument insertion. This video demonstrates the DPL simulator as it was presented at MMVR 2001. Design by Valerie Henry.

Cricothyroidotomy Emergency Procedure Training Simulator. A prototype simulator was deployed in Iraq. Initial feedback suggests that that system can be useful for providing field training and practice to incoming clinicians. When complete, the simulator will incorporate didactic content, multiple patient types and scenarios, and a virtual model of human physiology to provide trainees with a realistic environment for learning and practicing the procedure. VME Lab Pericardiocentesis

We have developed a computer-based simulator for this procedure. An early version uses the Reality Sculptor hardware platform. The system measures cannula insertion point, entry angle, and depth to determine if the procedure was performed correctly. These parameters are changeable by the instructor. Later versions used the lower cost CathSim AccuTouch vascular access device by Immersion Medical. Design by Valerie Henry.
