A Temporary Omnivore in Paris: September 2008
http://temporaryomnivore.blogspot.com/2008_09_01_archive.html
A Temporary Omnivore in Paris. Monday, September 8, 2008. While visiting Houston last month, I dropped by Brazos Bookstore. 160;and picked up a copy of Susan Bourette’s Meat: . A book that truly made me appreciate my own lack of street cred. . Bourette, a Canadian journalist, spent four days undercover in a pork processing plant and, disgusted by punitive working conditions and the sheer gruesomeness of the job, vowed to swear off meat. . This woman has street cred. Make trips to any farms, or ki...

Belgian for Beginners: September 2008
http://belgianforbeginners.blogspot.com/2008_09_01_archive.html
Musings on leaving New York and moving to Brussels. Tuesday, September 30, 2008. Believe it or not, the entire country of Belgium is almost entirely sans Starbucks. And welcome to Belgium, too. Labels: food and drink. Forecast: Rain All Week. After a beautiful weekend of lounging in the Bois de la Cambre and house hunting (more to follow), the weather has now reverted itself to what we were warned against: chronic rain. I believe we're in for a long, wet winter. Thursday, September 25, 2008. I have been ...

Belgian for Beginners: Some Love from the NYT
http://belgianforbeginners.blogspot.com/2009/06/some-love-from-nyt.html
Musings on leaving New York and moving to Brussels. Friday, June 26, 2009. Some Love from the NYT. These are a bit (i.e., days) old now, but was surprised to see two articles in the NYT this week - one pertaining directly to Brussels. And another to a castle. With a purportedly excellent garden relatively near here. I should probably also start reading Le Soir. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Memories of Grant Teton National Park, USA. This is Gonna Be Good. Grilled Cheese by petitesoeur.

Belgian for Beginners: September 2009
http://belgianforbeginners.blogspot.com/2009_09_01_archive.html
Musings on leaving New York and moving to Brussels. Monday, September 21, 2009. J and I have officially lived in Brussels for a year as of today, which seems like good enough of a reason to break out of a blogging funk. One year in, some likes, dislikes, and random opinions:. As a city to live in, Brussels really is easy, comfortable, and manageable. That being said, what provides the ease and comfort can also become a downside: at times it feels outright boring. The quality of the healthcare. Memories o...

Belgian for Beginners: "How I Learned to Love the European Welfare State"
http://belgianforbeginners.blogspot.com/2009/05/heres-article-from-todays-nyt-magazine.html
Musings on leaving New York and moving to Brussels. Sunday, May 3, 2009. How I Learned to Love the European Welfare State". Not sure I'm there yet, but here's an article. Having moved from the USA to Belgium, I know which social welfare and healthcare system I would rather depend on. The discrimination towards some immigrants in the Low Countries is such a shame. When people start talking that way to me, I remind them that I am an immigrant, but then they say "oh, but you're different". Breakfast, Part I.
