Carmel in Oz: Welcome to fabulous Brisvegas, Queensland
http://carmelinoz.blogspot.com/2010/07/welcome-to-fabulous-brisvegas.html
Girl in the Emerald City. Wednesday, 7 July 2010. Welcome to fabulous Brisvegas, Queensland. Brisbane is about an hour's flight north of Sydney, in slightly warmer climes, and is quite a modern city built on a river. I spent most of my time there on the South Bank, which was the arts district, but was creepily similar to London's South Bank, with its concrete brutalist square architecture and a wheel that seemed a copy of the London Eye. South Bank: London or Brisbane? Two very little old ladies. It's ta...

Carmel in Oz: Another long weekend
http://carmelinoz.blogspot.com/2011/05/another-long-weekend.html
Girl in the Emerald City. Wednesday, 25 May 2011. My trip away at Easter gave me an appetite for long weekends, so a bunch of friends and I decided to take a Friday and Monday off work last weekend and go down the coast for a holiday. Nick's friend Dee has a house in Jervis Bay, which I'd visited in my first winter in Australia, in the beautiful Callala beach. Chilling out at the beach house at dusk. Nick and Sam build sandcastles. Pretty good reading seat. The boys get manly and chop firewood. View my c...

Carmel in Oz: I *heart* New Zealand
http://carmelinoz.blogspot.com/2008/10/i-heart-new-zealand.html
Girl in the Emerald City. Sunday, 12 October 2008. I *heart* New Zealand. I left my BlackBerry charger at home, so had no contact with the outside world for two whole weeks (apart from the odd sneak into an internet cafe to check the rugby scores and bank balance! With dad near Lake Hawea. In a glacial cave. Dad getting soaked while caving. Twisty lakeside roads formed much of our route. Tek care. Lambs on t'road. Who will it be? At least this made us a very easygoing pair of travel companions, as we wer...

Carmel in Oz: Easter weekend
http://carmelinoz.blogspot.com/2011/04/easter-weekend.html
Girl in the Emerald City. Wednesday, 27 April 2011. Easter brought an extra long weekend for us here in Australia, as it coincided with a very important annual holiday, ANZAC day. Where we remember people from the Australia and New Zealand Army Corps who have given their lives in service of their (and the Mother) country. My five day weekend began with a fantastic brunch at the home of my friend Beth's parents. Amazing hot cross buns. Autumnal Easter road trip colours. And they have a fab location right ...

Carmel in Oz: Carmel in Oz in Canada!
http://carmelinoz.blogspot.com/2008/09/carmel-in-oz-in-canada.html
Girl in the Emerald City. Saturday, 6 September 2008. Carmel in Oz in Canada! So, my first trip overseas since I moved to Australia, after vowing never to take evil long haul. Sydney Skyline with the Spirit of Australia. She was a little surprised to see me, as Siobhan. Had expected me to land a couple of days later, but there they both were, Siobhan tanned after her trip to Fiji, and Helen taking a while to recognise me. They were both very good at keeping me awake so I could survive my jetlag. Monday 1...

Carmel in Oz: Nightmare bug experience No.1
http://carmelinoz.blogspot.com/2006/12/nightmare-bug-experience-no1.html
Girl in the Emerald City. Saturday, 23 December 2006. Nightmare bug experience No.1. Ok well for the first time I feel I may have made a mistake. A recent experience was almost a deal-breaker. I was this close to getting on the first plane home. And when I shared it with my Aussie friends they laughed and said 'Get used to it'. I DON'T WANT TO HAVE TO GET USED TO BUGS! Anyway, the following story may disturb you if you don't like bugs, so take that as a warning. Why did I not know this? Just, like, stuff.

Carmel in Oz: Birthday Fête
http://carmelinoz.blogspot.com/2008/02/birthday-fte.html
Girl in the Emerald City. Sunday, 24 February 2008. My birthday this year brings me to the final year of my twenties – next year will be the big 3-oh… This perturbs others in my family far more than myself, I have to say! 8230;Something about it making them feel old I think, while I just feel like life’s getting better and better. And after years of having a birthday in the middle of winter, it’s a joy to wake up to a glorious blue summer sky on the day I turn 29. Siobhan on the Tama cliffs. In our back ...

Carmel in Oz: Long haul flights are evil
http://carmelinoz.blogspot.com/2006/11/long-haul-flights-are-evil.html
Girl in the Emerald City. Wednesday, 29 November 2006. Long haul flights are evil. Second leg to Sydney I was plonked next to a gang of Indian IT nerds who feigned interest in my life in a pretext to practice their English, until I thankfully collapsed under the weight of my fatigue and slept fitfully beneath the airline blanket with my legs sticking out into the aisle - there are times when I'm really glad I'm so short! Looking forward to the adventure beginning. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Carmel in Oz: I *heart* Melbourne
http://carmelinoz.blogspot.com/2007/07/i-heart-melbourne.html
Girl in the Emerald City. Tuesday, 31 July 2007. Oh dear, it’s happened – I knew it would – I LOVE this city! I’ve been in Melbourne for a week now and I’ve really enjoying the vibe of the place, the cafes, bars, festival parties – Ok so I am on holiday and thus increasingly inclined to enjoy myself, but it’s just so European compared to Sydney! Like an Antipodean New York or something. Federation Square in Melbourne. 8211; I am recovering from my own film festival, after all! Sheila in Italy 07. My flic...

Carmel in Oz: A weekend in Byron Bay
http://carmelinoz.blogspot.com/2010/05/weekend-in-byron-bay.html
Girl in the Emerald City. Tuesday, 25 May 2010. A weekend in Byron Bay. When Siobhan visited Australia she really enjoyed her trip to Byron Bay. So this weekend I finally made it up the coast to see it for myself. My friend runs a travelling film festival which visits Byron, and she's recently announced her impending departure overseas, so a bunch of us went up to give her a good send-off and get away from the city for the weekend. The beautiful waters of Byron Bay. Oli jumps off a cliff. Nick and Jeff w...
