Sparrow Haven

A Suburban Refuge for the Rural at Heart. Thursday, August 29, 2013. Time to Say Good bye. I will not delete this blog as I think it has some interesting stuff that someone, some when may find useful. I am shutting down comments though. Most of the comments I have received over the years were nothing but spam anyways. It has been a good run and I hope I touched a few people, made some one think beyond their own realm of influence, and maybe even taught someone something new. Goodnight and Good bye.

Sparrow Haven: October 2012

http://sparrowhaven.blogspot.com/2012_10_01_archive.html

A Suburban Refuge for the Rural at Heart. Sunday, October 28, 2012. End of Garden Goodness. I don't know how often this happens to anyone else, but every year I get a huge number of tomatoes after the first frost. Most of them are so green they are white, some of them are just starting to turn pink, and some of them are half and half. Many people look at that, shrug, and turn the whole thing under. 15-20 lbs of green and partial green tomatoes diced. 2 cps lime juice. 1 cp dried cilantro. 2 tspn of Cumi.

Sparrow Haven: June 2012

http://sparrowhaven.blogspot.com/2012_06_01_archive.html

A Suburban Refuge for the Rural at Heart. Thursday, June 28, 2012. This has been a very busy month so far. Thankfully it is almost over and with luck July and August will be a little less busy. We've actually been extremely busy since we joined the SCA. Other than that, it looks like we will be able to take some time to ourselves. Peter will be spending time with the horses, I will be spending time working in the garden and with luck canning tomatoes. Did I say we will be less busy? Links to this post.

Sparrow Haven: September 2012

A Suburban Refuge for the Rural at Heart. Monday, September 03, 2012. Another weekend, another batch of spaghetti sauce. We had enough tomatoes to do the sauce last weekend but we were busy attending an event on Saturday. Spaghetti sauce takes two days, one day to cook and another to can. Links to this post. Sparrow Haven: May 2012

http://sparrowhaven.blogspot.com/2012_05_01_archive.html

A Suburban Refuge for the Rural at Heart. Monday, May 28, 2012. The weather has once again gone from cool to hot. Not just hot but really freaking hot. My hopes for getting radishes were dashed with the heat, and I fear my chances of getting decent kohlrabi as slim as well. Radishes and all members of the brassica family; such as kohlrabi, cauliflower, and cabbage, are considered cool weather crops. Generally considered great crops for Canada due to the cooler air temperatures and lots of sun. This is th...

Thursday, July 24, 2008. Bernie is a Fence Spoolin' Fool. And here it is:. And here's how it works - see the big piece poking up in the middle in the above picture? Well, Bernie lays that down towards the ground and "threads" in the bale of wire. Like this:. And he pulls, and pulls, and pulls:. It works like a charm. Weird Peo...

Back to Basic Living Blog. Dedicated to homesteading, basic living, survival skills, country life knowledge and a simpler way of life. Life is tough, but living doesn't have to be. Saturday, August 30, 2008. Raising Meal Worms 101. I am no expert on raising meal worms, but I've gotten enough personal emails asking about it that I thought I'd post about the method I have chosen - and include pictures. Slowly back away from your computer monitor, close this page, and no one will get hurt. A simple search o...

Back to Basic Living Blog. Dedicated to homesteading, basic living, survival skills, country life knowledge and a simpler way of life. Life is tough, but living doesn't have to be. Sunday, March 30, 2008. Charlotte gave me a Mimosa she had in a pot for a couple of years. I've kept it inside, but she left it outside year round, so I finally decided it was hardy enough to plant outside now. Bernie actually did the planting, but I told him where I wanted it and then stood by and gave lots of advise ...We're...

Thursday, August 28, 2008. Rain, Roosters, and Getting Sideways. If this keeps up much longer, we may have a completely full rain barrel - and that will come in handy when Bernie does something else to irritate Mother Nature. Bernie took a picture of the chickens outside playing in the rain:. My meal worms are multiplying like...

Back to Basic Living Blog. Dedicated to homesteading, basic living, survival skills, country life knowledge and a simpler way of life. Life is tough, but living doesn't have to be. Monday, September 15, 2008. Egg On My Face. This morning I opened the chicken door to let the chickens out and, as I do each morning, I opened the "human" door to walk inside the coop and make sure there was plenty of food and water. I looked over at the hen boxes and almost screamed for joy. Eggs! One in each box? I don't bla...

Tuesday, April 29, 2008. April Showers Bring . Lots of Rain! Between rainy days, Bernie has to find one dry enough to go to town and mow the lawn at our house there. Tuesday, July 21, 2015. The future master bath. There are times when words just don't cut it, and I'm afraid the last post was one of those times. So, floor plans, drawn just poorly enough to still be useful! Probably not. But a second floor laundry is certainly all it's cracked up to be, and having a decent shower in the distant future won't be so bad either. Links to this post. Friday, July 17, 2015.
