So good, who cares if it's improvised?
Spontaneous Theater: The Newsies
http://spontaneoustheater.blogspot.com/2013/06/the-newsies.html
So good, who cares if it's improvised? Sunday, June 9, 2013. There's a very common improvised group number format, used for the opening number of many improvised musicals, which goes like this:. All improvisers take a position on the stage. One improviser sings a chorus as a solo. All improvisers repeat the chorus together. One improviser sings a verse as a solo. All improvisers repeat the chorus together. Repeat steps 4-5 a couple more times, with new verse lyrics. Instead of letting any one person take...
Spontaneous Theater: Creating and Sharing Show Videos
http://spontaneoustheater.blogspot.com/2013/07/creating-and-sharing-show-videos.html
So good, who cares if it's improvised? Friday, July 26, 2013. Creating and Sharing Show Videos. From the very first Wünderstudies show, we have shared highlight videos of scenes and songs recorded live. This is a rare practice in Pittsburgh, because it is hard to make a video represent an improv show well. Some are aware of this and choose not to share videos. Others are not aware and share videos which are more likely to turn people away than attract them. 1 Place the camera amidst the audience. I'm the...
Spontaneous Theater: Fueling Narrative with Desires and Influence
http://spontaneoustheater.blogspot.com/2013/06/fueling-narrative-with-desires-and.html
So good, who cares if it's improvised? Wednesday, June 26, 2013. Fueling Narrative with Desires and Influence. Narrative improv is improvised theater which follows a coherent storyline instead of a series of disconnected scenes. Narrative improv can be very linear, with every scene following a single protagonist through a series of chronological events. However, it can also be more complex, weaving together a few separate threads into a larger whole by the end of the show. Set up a very clear desire.

Spontaneous Theater: Hook line and sing 'er
http://spontaneoustheater.blogspot.com/2013/06/hook-line-and-sing-er.html
So good, who cares if it's improvised? Sunday, June 2, 2013. Hook line and sing 'er. Every improvised song should have a strong hook line. The hook line is the line that sticks with the audience after they leave the show. The line they hum on the drive home. The line they remember 2 weeks later when they reminisce about the show and invite a friend to the next show. It should be concise. It should be repeated. The theme of the song. Here's another example. (The song begins at 2:45.). You're a hopeless ro...

Yes, Yes And, Fuck Yes: March 2013
http://improvgreg.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html
Friday, March 29, 2013. Improv Bestiary: The Lobotomist. Did you forget to take your pills? How did you get out of the hospital? You're just drunk, you don't mean any of that! Maaaan we're so high! I think those were special brownies! This is one weird dream. Is there a time for these kind of things in scenes? And I know the excuses. Reality got denied! They said something that's impossible to justify! They weren't listening to what I just said and it got weird! Monday, March 25, 2013. Hear my dumb voice!
Yes, Yes And, Fuck Yes: The Magic Circle And Professionalism
http://improvgreg.blogspot.com/2014/01/the-magic-circle-and-professionalism.html
Wednesday, January 29, 2014. The Magic Circle And Professionalism. Posted this a little bit ago and it merits spreading around:. It's a great video from a great series (their videos on narrative are fantastic). And this one has a bunch of applications to improv. Will these things turn a good show into a bad one? Of course not. But they don't serve to give your show the best chance it can have. Walk through the lighting and music cues, give them a cheat sheet, have them do a dry run before the house opens.
Yes, Yes And, Fuck Yes: October 2013
http://improvgreg.blogspot.com/2013_10_01_archive.html
Thursday, October 31, 2013. As always: Energy. Support. Energy. A couple weeks ago I was up at the New York Musical Improv Festival. With the improvised-rap group Yo Gloria! One the way back to Pittsburgh I think I realized what he was talking about. It was the end of a scene and I got into a huge call and response with the team (repeating the word hologram: HOLO! It wasn't a character line, it wasn't a joke, it wasn't really anything except us all pouring everything we had into one tiny idea. And it was...

Yes, Yes And, Fuck Yes: Improv Advent #22
http://improvgreg.blogspot.com/2013/12/improv-advent-22.html
Monday, December 23, 2013. 22 - No Sorry. Attention new improvisers, please stop saying you're sorry. With your mouth or with your body. Stop saying it, stop doing it. They are poisonous. I resolve in 2014 to yell at you for this if I'm in a position to. You have to, have to. Accept your actions as they are. Take your notes as avenues to improvements not as you being chastised. It's not personal. It's making what you do better, it's not about making you better. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).
Yes, Yes And, Fuck Yes: Improv Advent #21
http://improvgreg.blogspot.com/2013/12/improv-advent-21.html
Sunday, December 22, 2013. 21 - Short Form is Hard Work. I have no idea if that whole short-form vs long-form thing is really a thing. Maybe in our little hamlet it's not as big of a deal, given the strong history of short-form shows here. But having just done a show with short form games, with little preparation it has reminded me:. Doing short-form right ain't easy. Switching it up and playing some short-form, or even practicing it. I still hate Party Quirks. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).
Yes, Yes And, Fuck Yes: September 2013
http://improvgreg.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html
Wednesday, September 4, 2013. Are There Mistakes In Improv. A couple weeks ago I was listening to TED Radio Hour. And got to this segment on Are There Mistakes In Jazz. The gist of it, as musical and theatrical improvisation are brothers, definitely applies: listening and accepting are principals that success is built on. An artistic collaboration falls apart and sours when you don't actively pay attention to and adapt to your partners. But isn't it wonderful when it all does come together?

http://improvgreg.blogspot.com/2013_02_01_archive.html
Monday, February 25, 2013. Here's an exercise I like to do:. It's based on the simple pass-the-clap game: Everyone in a circle, passing the focus by making eye contact and trying to clap at the same time. The common variations of this are:. Start just going in a circle, one-way. Let people reverse the circle's direction by maintaining eye contact on the pass and giving it back. Opening it up to passing anywhere in the circle. I like to extend this exercise by. Friday, February 22, 2013. If you're a begin...
Yes, Yes And, Fuck Yes: May 2013
http://improvgreg.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html
Wednesday, May 29, 2013. Group Games Are Made By Individual Moves. Ah group games. What should be the most fun, free, Yes and the And time in a show. Then we get dinosaurs tromping on stage for 90 seconds before someone says "Hey guys! This is a library! Then we get 5 seconds of quiet dinosaurs. Edit. OK, that's a perfectly fine group game. But it happens all the damn time. 90% organic pattern matching. 5% Pay off (if we didin't end the scene on the justification, that it). The sound-and-motion-pattern-m...

To brighten attitudes with random gratitudes. Sunday, December 14, 2014. Sometimes you just feel pummeled. Stuck in one of those months where you can't seem to keep your head up very long.
