A Motley Vision: Publishing: Choice in LDS Books
http://motleyvision.blogspot.com/2006/06/publishing-choice-in-lds-books.html
AMV is now at www.motleyvision.org. Publishing: Choice in LDS Books. Those who have read my previous posts (yes, those from last Fall, when I last gave myself enough time to write here) know that I think the market for LDS books is crippled. It is only able to supply a relatively narrow range of books to a relatively narrow audience, and as a result either ignores or turns-off a large portion, perhaps even the majority, of those who might purchase LDS books. That the store has decided not to carry? Many ...

A Motley Vision: Mormon Lit: A Believing People
http://motleyvision.blogspot.com/2006/05/mormon-lit-believing-people.html
AMV is now at www.motleyvision.org. Mormon Lit: A Believing People. Which inspired my self-guided tour in the first place). Every ABP entry could probably give birth to many essays; this quick review does not aspire to comprehensiveness. But some things did stand out to me. For example:. Ed Geary’s essay Goodbye to Poplarhaven. Eliza R. Snow’s Hymns. Donald Marshall’s story The Week-end. Even so this is me aspiring to objectivity ABP’s earlier selections (say prior to the 1930s) generally depend too much...

A Motley Vision: Folk Culture/Criticism: The Rhetoric of Stealing God
http://motleyvision.blogspot.com/2006/04/folk-culturecriticism-rhetoric-of.html
AMV is now at www.motleyvision.org. Folk Culture/Criticism: The Rhetoric of Stealing God. Stealing God narratives divide into three categories: failure folklore, firewall folklore, and stealing God narratives proper wherein someone exploits another's circumstances for personal benefit, self-stimulating inspirational stories being among them. One day as I tried to feed her she swallowed an even tinier fraction of food than usual. At the end of my rope, I spread my arms wide, looked up at the ceiling t...

A Motley Vision: "Backslider" Turns 20
http://motleyvision.blogspot.com/2006/06/backslider-turns-20.html
AMV is now at www.motleyvision.org. One of the more interesting events in Mormon Literature this year is the 20th anniversary of the publication of The Backslider. Perhaps the finest LDS novel published to date. (The other novel widely considered for this designation is Maureen Whipple's The Giant Joshua. Personally, I prefer The Backslider. Regardless of what you think of LDS literature, this is one title that is worth the read, and should be included in the " canon. The Last of the Mohicans. Mormon Lit...

A Motley Vision: Criticism: The Importance of Being Ironic, Part One
http://motleyvision.blogspot.com/2006/05/criticism-importance-of-being-ironic.html
AMV is now at www.motleyvision.org. Criticism: The Importance of Being Ironic, Part One. In my opinion irony is a much and unreasonably maligned concept. Associating irony with offensive or subversive intent some relegate it to outer rhetorical darkness. This is especially true in some religious circles where irony is looked upon as being dangerous to steadfast belief. But is learning to identify and engage irony in fact more useful and needful than we might suspect? Competition to arrive first is fierce...

A Motley Vision: An Interview With Eric Samuelsen
http://motleyvision.blogspot.com/2006/05/interview-with-eric-samuelsen.html
AMV is now at www.motleyvision.org. An Interview With Eric Samuelsen. MAHONRI: You've obviously established yourself very much as a Mormon playwright. Some see you as one of the current leaders of the movement. [Most of your plays]- they have strong ties to Mormonism. What draws you to Mormon Theater as a genre? How do your religious beliefs and experiences effect your work? What I loved about it was the implication that we could and should write about conflicts in our culture, about difficulties and str...

Six LDS Writers and A Frog: April 2006
http://sixldswriters.blogspot.com/2006_04_01_archive.html
Six LDS Writers and A Frog. Friday, April 28, 2006. I'm Going to Disney World! By Sariah S. Wilson. A big welcome to Kerry Blair! We're all tickled green to have you. I used to love those commercials where people would win gold medals or the Super Bowl or the National Spelling Bee and then the announcer would ask, "What are you going to do next? And said champion while holding both arms aloft would announce, "I'm going to Disney World! Sonow that I've sold my book, what I am going to do next? The posts o...
