Springfield Church Blog: 08/01/2008 - 09/01/2008

http://springfieldchurchofchrist.blogspot.com/2008_08_01_archive.html

Sunday, August 10, 2008. As we learn to develop the skills for ministry we have been discussing over the last several weeks, it will be our trust in God to keep the promises he has made that will both sustain us and call us deeper into ministry. This prayer by Walter Brueggeman, an Old Testament scholar, asks God for help trusting his promises in order that we might answer his call to ministry:. You are the God who makes extravagant promises. We relish your great promises. And we exude in them. Buying a ...

Sunday, December 30, 2007. Thoughts for the New Year. Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless;. Maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed. Rescue the weak and needy;. Deliver them from the hand of the wicked. Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased. Hebrews 13: 1-3, 16).

Sunday, February 17, 2008. Some Facts about Acts. It’s not a fact that Luke wrote Acts, but evidence points us in that direction. Here are some facts:. Acts was written on a Papyrus roll (35 to 40 feet long). Both Luke and Acts are about the same length in material. Luke is the longest book in the New Testament. Acts is the second longest book in the NT. Themes in Luke are continued in Acts:. 1) Favorable attitude towards Samaritans (Luke 9:52-56; 17:11-19; Acts 8). Posted by Dave Parker.

Sunday, March 30, 2008. By faith Abel, by faith Enoch, by faith Noah, by faith Abraham and Sarah . . . All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance. And they admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth . . . they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them. By faith Abraham, b. As told in the ...

Springfield Church Blog: Even the Waves

http://springfieldchurchofchrist.blogspot.com/2008/07/even-waves.html

Sunday, July 20, 2008. That day when evening came, [Jesus] said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.”. Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown? Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. As we m...

Dave's thoughts: Rethinking Christianity with Brian McLaren

http://parkerdp.blogspot.com/2006/08/rethinking-christianity-with-brian.html

A scary thing, no doubt. Thursday, August 31, 2006. Rethinking Christianity with Brian McLaren. Among all the audiobooks, audio lectures, podcasts and so forth I've become addicted to for my commutes, I've had the opportunity to listen to 3 of Brian McLaren's. My wife and I both have enjoyed his appealling way of summarizing the Bible (in an engaging narrative form) in " The Story We Find Ourselves In. The second in his " A New Kind of Christian. Posted by Dave Parker. You can add it to my Christmas list.

Dave's thoughts: Quick Bible review of Hell

http://parkerdp.blogspot.com/2006/09/quick-bible-review-of-hell.html

A scary thing, no doubt. Saturday, September 16, 2006. Quick Bible review of Hell. One of the recent Brian Mclaren books I've listened to recently seemed to hint that we've been misled a bit about the Bible's actual teaching on hell- especially what that would have meant to people of Jesus' day. My initial reaction to that was, "huh? I know a large percentage of people these days- even Christians- supposedly don't believe in a hell, but I figured that has more to do with people not. Hades" seems to be cl...

Dave's thoughts: An Experience in Worship

http://parkerdp.blogspot.com/2006/10/experience-in-worship.html

A scary thing, no doubt. Tuesday, October 10, 2006. An Experience in Worship. Another great time at the Zoe Conference. Usually, the most useful take away is a bunch of new songs that I can try to teach my church. Their latest CD, Closer, I think will provide quite a few decent possibilities. Current candidates are Rising; Closer; No Other Gods; The Power of The Cross, To God Be the Glory ( an updated version of the classic). mmmm. Can't wait! Praise be to God! Posted by Dave Parker.

Dave's thoughts: November 2006

http://parkerdp.blogspot.com/2006_11_01_archive.html

A scary thing, no doubt. Thursday, November 02, 2006. I attended a week long, all day, all evening Family Practice Board review in Lancaster, PA last month. Of the many, many lectures that week, one really stood out as the most surprising and probably the most important- "Adverse Childhood Experiences and Their Relationship to Adult Health Status", given by Vincent Felitti, MD. Psychological Abuse (by parents) 11%. Physical Abuse (by parents) 11%. Sexual Abuse (by anyone) 22%. Mother treated violently 13%.

http://parkerdp.blogspot.com/2007_03_01_archive.html

A scary thing, no doubt. Friday, March 30, 2007. Howdy from the Pyramids. Yep Here we all are in front of the Pyramids at Giza- on camels, of course! Audra wasn't too crazy about the camel thing, but the kids loved it. Here are some more pictures. Let me just say this trip was great! It well surpassed our expectations. We spent two weeks in Egypt- a week in Southern Egypt, AKA "upper Egypt"( up the Nile),. And Coptic Cairo) are, but you'll want to spend most of the time away from the Cairo traffic- yikes!

Dave's thoughts: Pride and Charity

http://parkerdp.blogspot.com/2006/09/pride-and-charity.html

A scary thing, no doubt. Friday, September 15, 2006. At long last, I suppose, I've found the joys of Mere Christianity. I've heard so many Christians from so many different backgrounds point to this book as being critical to their faith. I got the audiobook. Version recently and started into it this week. Yep, it's worthy of its praise. Lewis, is so right about "the center of Christian morality" being Pride. ".the essential vice, the utmost evil, is Pride. Unchastity. Posted by Dave Parker.
