ZAUJÍMAVOSTI ZO SVETA LESOV. Najvyšší strom na svete je sekvoja. Niektoré dosahujú výšku vyše 78m a ich kmene majú priemer takmer 9 metrov. Najdlhšie žijú stromy ako sekvoja (4000 rokov), cyprus obyč. (3000), gaštan (2000), céder lilanómsky (1200). Dub známy svojim dlhým vekom žije len 500-700 rokov. Napriek tomu najstarším stromom sveta je borovica atená, ktorá rastie v lesoch Severnej Ameriky a je stará vyše 4600 rokov.

Sú stromy vyššie ako 3m, ak rastú na ploche najmenej 100m. Ďalej ho tvoria kry, byliny, machorasty, huby, lišajníky. Spolu so živočíchmi tvoria zložitý prírodný útvar, v ktorom navzájom pôsobí množstvo rozličných organizmov. Ich špecifické spolupôsobenie má rozhodujúci význam pre udržanie ekologickej rovnováhy lesa ako jednotného celku. Predstavuje vyvážené klimaxové spoločenstvo, ktoré sa stále obnovuje a je v dynamickej rovnováhe s abiotickým stanovišťom. Ako všetko živé na Zemi, tak aj lesy.

Vo vznikajúcom lese sa rastliny postupne prispôsobujú meniacim sa pôdnym a svetelným podmienkam. Ich korene zasahujú do rozličnej hĺbky v pôde a nadzemné časti dosahujú určitú výšku lesného porastu - etáž (vrstvu). V lese rozlišujeme štyri nadzemné etáže, každú z nich obývajú rozličné druhy živočíchov.
