Of moths and man (and other stuff). Saturday, May 30, 2015. Garden odds and ends. As tomorrow is looking a little iffy on the weather front, I had a day catching up with gardening chores. Most of the day was spent mowing with occasionally pauses to pot insects that I came across. The pick of today's bunch were a Helophilus pendulus. Hoverfly, a Scorpionfly Panorpa. With the abysmal weather of the last few days and a mounting workload before summer holidays next week, natural history has taken a bit of a sideline. I have had the moth trap a couple of times which has resulted in three new species for the garden. Firstly, Lunar-spotted Pinion Cosmia pyralina,. Not one that was on my radar and threw me at first when i turned over the egg box. Not unsusal locally though apparently. View my complete profile.

Well I say my first woodlouse, but in all honesty I've seen hundreds of the things it's just that I've never got round to trying to identifying one to species. So while laying a hedge and moving some bricks in the garden today I decided to pot a couple I found and sat down with a copy of the AIDGAP Woodlice book by Hopkins. Of moths and man (and other stuff). Tuesday, July 14, 2015. Tiger in the kitchen. I normally just ignore craneflies but this one caught my eye as it was a bit of a looker with those stripes. Turns out it's a Tiger Cranefly. Not one I've knowingly seen before. Apparently adults take nectar and pollen from flowers. Their larvae look pretty much like all other. Of moths and man (and other stuff). Tuesday, December 30, 2014. I still have a couple of beetles to key out from the autumn but I won't have time to get the microscope out until next week so this species becomes my last species of 2014. I know I've seen these before but had never actually bothered to identify one. This is a Black Snail Beetle Silpha atrata. That came to the garden moth trap on the 31st of October (and I forgot about). It's a widespread species according to the literature and the NBN map.

Of moths and man (and other stuff). Sunday, July 12, 2015. All the best things are unexpected, especially longhorns. While visiting friends in Norfolk I was looking at flower heads for hoverflies and came across this longhorn beetle. I knew it was one I hadn't seen before (mainly because I've seen very few! Took a few of pics of it feeding before it flew off onto my friend's t-shirt. Looks like it is Stictoleptura rubra. Sometimes known as Red Longhorn Beetle. A rather pleasing unexpected tick.
