Fire Tube Boilers are so called because the water, that we want to turn into steam, is on the outside of the tubes. Also know as Smoke Tube Boilers as it is usually the Smoke that through the tubes not the fire! Higher water volume for a given steam generating capacity. Generally heavier than a Water Tube Boiler of similar output. Flashes up (= raises steam) less quickly. Simpler and hence less expensive to build. More forgiving to fluctuating feed water flow = more forgiving of inattention!
