stewart's studio

Saturday, 22 February 2014. A thought from the train. What is it about conceptual art that so winds me up? It's almost irrational. Perhaps it is because I do not have the necessary kind of imagination. When I see an everyday object in a gallery, I see an everyday object. I don't see beyond that. It does not speak to me. It could be argued that its prominence is in part due to a mess-media built on, and hungry for, short term sensationalism, scandal and shock. Few art forms can so readily feed that maw.

stewart's studio: Never the same one twice

http://stewartsstudio.blogspot.com/2013/08/never-same-one-twice.html

Friday, 2 August 2013. Never the same one twice. 169; 2010 Craig Munro and Stewart Bremner. The dreams are of aeroplanes, although never the same one twice. They always crash and I, on the ground below watching them, try to avoid being hit. Sometimes it is just the one plane, sometimes the sky is full of them. They crash and explode, past the horizon, in the city, in a river or a school. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). The somewhat lapsed studio blog of artist Stewart Bremner. My Society6 print shop.

stewart's studio: June 2013

http://stewartsstudio.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html

Friday, 28 June 2013. Against a dark background. A few weeks ago author Iain Banks passed away, taken before his time by cancer. His work has been a part of my world for almost all of my adult life. He wrote and released a novel a year throughout his career and I am very sad that I no longer have that yearly marker to look forward to. Four drying limited edition prints of '51 Plymouth. It is a dark and rainy Friday afternoon, at the end of a week that has not been overly troubled by sunshine. Followi...

stewart's studio: The only constant

http://stewartsstudio.blogspot.com/2013/07/the-only-constant.html

Friday, 26 July 2013. I've only made one painting this year. It has been seven months and I have made one painting. At the beginning of the year, I took some time off after a very busy few months at the end of last year. However that was months ago and in another country and I'm home now and all I seem to do is watch my studio gather dust. There is a misconception, held by some, that an artist has to suffer to make art, that a happy artist does not work. (Van Gogh would almost certainly become an exa...

Sunday, March 25, 2012. Autumn Etude • 21" x 14" • cloth, dye • ©2012 Jennifer Libby Fay. If it weren’t for my friends and fellow textile artists, Dotti Day. And Joanne Salz (who is, sadly websiteless), I would not be the artist (or person) I am today. Our friendship is supported by our desire to make art, our love of textiles and our passion (some would say obsession) for learning and inspiration. Dotti and I attended Marie-Therese Wisniowski’s workshop on Disperse Dyes. Is a fantastic resource. PRISCIL...

Wednesday, May 23, 2012. RUBICON: point of no return. Overture for Today • 22" x 22" • cloth, dye • ©2012 Jennifer Libby Fay. I have tried, a few times, to describe the process I usually go through when I choose a theme for a body of work—I don’t really know where the seed thought for a concept comes from. It feels like a nudge, from the universe, from God, from my unconscious, or even the collective unconscious? Bohemian Grove • 21" x 13" • cloth, dye • ©2012 Jennifer Libby Fay. May 2 - June 1. We were on our way to the Fed Ex substation to pick up the case of wine I'd ordered from Hafner Vineyard. One of our favorite California wineries. Do you want to stop for coffee? What I WANT, I replied, is a REAL bagel, with REAL cream cheese, and LOX with a slice of tomato and some capers. THAT'S what I WANT.". No, that can't possibly be. Dee Mallon...

Wednesday, August 22, 2012. Peters Valley • Day One. I should be concentrating on what workshop instructor, Lisa Grey. Is saying about mixing dye, but all I can think about are the ticks. Yes, ticks, as in Deer Ticks, the kind that carry Lyme’s disease. I am in New Jersey at Peters Valley Craft Center. Attending a workshop called, Disperse Dyes: Reinventing the Wheel. I’m here at Lisa’s invitation as her guest and also because this is what I do. Making Art Makes a Difference. Our first day Lisa covered e...
