Cemetery 48: Helsinki’s Hietaniemi Cemetery – stone and dust
https://stoneanddust.com/2016/08/30/cemetery-48-helsinkis-hietaniemi-cemetery
Photography and musings on cemeteries. Cemetery 48: Helsinki’s Hietaniemi Cemetery. Since I often travel alone I usually don’t worry too much about what I see and when. This sometimes backfires, but usually it works well, allowing me to stay in places that catch my interest and forgoing those that don’t. Unfortunately, when I was in St. Petersburg I got really sick. Having passed by the cemetery on my first day in Helsinki, I realised (I hope I was right) that the more northern section was newer. I s...

Photography and musings on cemeteries. Cemetery 33: Nikko’s Self-Immolation Cemetery. There is something about moss in the rain, the green is so luminescent, the air that surrounds it is practically breathing, that it makes one forget the frenetic pace of life in the concrete and steel cities of Japan. So it was as I made my way to Nikko,. Person.” This ties in nicely with what I found next. According to Lafacadio Hearn in “Japan: An Attempt at Interpretation” (1904),. Cemetery 35: The Kremlin Memorials – stone and dust
https://stoneanddust.com/2016/08/11/cemetery-35-the-kremlin-memorials
Photography and musings on cemeteries. Cemetery 35: The Kremlin Memorials. Or…Lenin’s Mausoleum, the Kremlin Wall Necropolis, and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. I have to admit it: I have this strange fascination for embalmed Communist leaders. Well, maybe fascination is too strong a word, but there’s. And a more permanent tomb was built. And he’s been on display for over 90 years, despite the fact the most Russians feel that it would be appropriate to bury him once and for all. Lenin’s Mausoleum...
Cemetery 34: Tallinn’s Siselinna – stone and dust

Photography and musings on cemeteries. Cemetery 34: Tallinn’s Siselinna. Now here’s a cemetery I had never heard of, until I thought to research cemeteries in Tallinn (actually, that’s pretty common to all the cemeteries on this trip). There were actually a few cemeteries that sounded quite interesting to visit, but I only had time. Not many monuments as such, but, as noted, plenty of crosses for the cross enthusiast. Toonela tee 3, 10132 Tallinn, Estonia. 09:00-16:00. Closed weekends. August 9, 2016.

Falling Off the Map. February 9, 2015. Bull; 0 Comments. Keage Station. It’s quiet, empty. I am the only person to have gotten off the train. Falling Off the Map. Plastic Fantastic: RIP Holga (1981-2015). December 1, 2015. Bull; 0 Comments. I don’t know when I first heard of a Holga, but I have a feeling it was probably ten years ago when I was doing a darkroom course in Toronto, although I didn’t buy one until a year or two later, when I was living in France. I used Michelle Bates’ Plastic Cameras: Toying with Creativity. A simple plastic* lens, around 60mm* focal length. One effective* * aperture. The limited, off-centre viewfinder. Over the...

Falling Off the Map. Into the lands of the gods. November 29, 2015. Bull; 0 Comments. The not-so-gentle rocking of the train curved along the single track, following the S-shaped route of the river parallel to it. As I rocked back in forth in my seat, the train ride towards Matsue was a gentle reminder that I was leaving city life behind me. I could barely make out the low, rolling mountains on either side of us as the day quickly turned into night. Museum with a view: Adachi Gardens, Shimane. Or the way...

Falling Off the Map. How to survive Japanese Festivals. August 16, 2014. Bull; 0 Comments. Japanese festivals come in all sorts of forms: fireworks, parades, formal and informal entertainment, dances, and more. I like going to festivals, they’re interesting, fun, and visually visceral. stone and dust – photography and musings on cemeteries
Photography and musings on cemeteries. Death and Spinsterhood: It’s personal. I’ve had an on-again, off-again relationship with cemeteries my entire life. I mean seriously where did this year go? I actually made this Salt Scrub back in the Summer for a friend who was getting married. I made me an extra little pot to leave in the guest bathroom. I actually use it on my face and let me tell you, it gives me the nicest glow and softest skin ever. I found the recipe here. 1 cup kosher salt.
