A blog on craft beer, home brewing, and yeast wrangeling. Wild and Sour Brewing. Monday, 3 August 2015. Brew Day - Summer Rye Saison. Northern Brewer, Tettnanger and Coriander. So despite my less-than-ideal results with my Berliner Weisse. I'm still quaffing a litre of it a day, meaning the keg is rapidly approaching empty. As we're smack-dab in the middle of the hot and humid phase of summer another easy-drinking and refreshing beer is on the menu - specifically, my favourite summer beer Saison. Single ...

Sui Generis Brewing: Sour Opprobrium - Tasting Notes
http://www.suigenerisbrewing.blogspot.com/2015/07/sour-opprobrium-tasting-notes.html
A blog on craft beer, home brewing, and yeast wrangeling. Wild and Sour Brewing. Tuesday, 21 July 2015. Sour Opprobrium - Tasting Notes. An ideal summer afternoon - Berliner Weisse, tunes and. A magazine on the backyard deck. So the Berliner Weisse that was a topic of a rather extensive post two weeks ago. Is kegged and carbed, meaning its time for a tasting! This beer was a rapid sour, produced by souring pre-hopped wort in the kettle using a mix of commercial Lactobacilli. So its a good beer, but not t...

Fervent Brewer: Simplifying Homebrewing - Grains
http://blog.ferventbrewer.com/2016/11/simplifying-homebrewing-grains.html
Friday, November 4, 2016. Simplifying Homebrewing - Grains. I recently purchased 12 - 1 gallon PET storage containers. I should probably start with a list of beers I know I brew repeatedly. That will help pick some of the grains to keep on hand. Panhead Supercharger Clone - About 2-4x/year. Saison - 2x/year in the summer. Brown Ale - 2-3x/year. Stout - 1-2x/year (Includes RIS). Belgian Dark Strong 1x/year. Sours 4x/year (Includes Kettle Soured). 2-Row is $50, I think Marris Otter is more like $65 a bag.
Fervent Brewer: Big Beautiful Barleywine
http://blog.ferventbrewer.com/2016/10/big-beautiful-barleywine.html
Thursday, October 27, 2016. I brewed my first Barleywine a couple weeks ago. I love the style, it's a great beer to sip on in the middle of winter. I didn't have the sense to take a bunch of pictures but I do have a shot of my 17.5 gallon mash tun filled for a partigyle brew from the Barleywine mash :). The Barleywine mash itself was at the very top. Since this was my first attempt at a Barleywine I purchased a great resource on the subject that never made it to me by brew day :(. Here is the recipe:.

Fervent Brewer: Tilt Hydrometer Formerly Brewometer Review Part 2
http://blog.ferventbrewer.com/2016/11/tilt-hydrometer-formerly-brewometer.html
Monday, November 7, 2016. Tilt Hydrometer Formerly Brewometer Review Part 2. I wrote my first review of the Tilt about 7 weeks ago. After my first brew with it. I've brewed about 6 beers since then so I think it's time to write the follow up and my final rating. I now have 7 brews with the Tilt under my belt. I've calibrated it to the best of my ability without anymore extensive instructions than the Tilt Guide. Provides, which is none. At some point I'm going to have to change the batteries. Probabl...
Fervent Brewer: Canning Wort For Starters
http://blog.ferventbrewer.com/2016/10/canning-wort-for-starters.html
Thursday, October 13, 2016. Canning Wort For Starters. I'm sure this is a subject blogged/vlogged about multiple times but since this was my first experience with the process I'll just write a bit about it. I had a planned brewed day last Friday, I was going to brew a Barleywine. This changed because I wanted to get some wort canned and I wanted to get another use out the WLP002 before kicking the shit out of it with a Barleywine. Mash and batch sparge as usual then start the boil. I pressure cooked at 1...
Fervent Brewer: Yeast Banking - First Slant
http://blog.ferventbrewer.com/2016/10/yeast-banking-first-slant.html
Monday, October 17, 2016. Yeast Banking - First Slant. I don't think I wrote about making my slants but I created them when I was canning some extra wort for starters. I wrote about that in this post http:/ blog.ferventbrewer.com/2016/10/canning-wort-for-starters.html. I simply used the methods taught in this blog post https:/ suigenerisbrewing.blogspot.com/2015/11/easy-home-yeast-banking-and-video.html? From Sui Generis, it's a much better resource than I could ever be on the subject. A Good Beer Blog.

Fervent Brewer: Brewing Budget
http://blog.ferventbrewer.com/2016/09/brewing-budget.html
Tuesday, September 27, 2016. I plan to stretch the budget by being better at harvesting yeast for the future. I'm going to pick 5 strains that I'll attempt to keep in a healthy state. That also seems like a lot but I want to brew US, British and Belgian ales plus lagers and sours. I'd say 5 strains is a minimum. The 5th will be a mixed culture and I'll pull dregs from bottles for that. British Barleywine (An effort to utilize that WLP002 yeast cake from the brown ale and porter). A Good Beer Blog. Ales o...
