Thursday, June 13, 2013. On Father's Day, 2011, Geoff and I came to the conclusion that we didn't want to be married anymore. We cried, we talked. We asked ourselves, "What happens now? I needed a job. After pestering the owner of our local Wild Birds Unlimited, I was hired. The cabin was completed in February of 2012. Eight months after we decided to divorce. Susan Gets Native: What does a birder look like?

http://susankwilliams.blogspot.com/2011/10/what-does-birder-look-like.html

Saturday, October 15, 2011. What does a birder look like? There's been a recurring theme lately in the birding world, and this post has been slowly and steadily building in me. It's about birders and how the world sees us, if we even care about their opinion, and where we are going as a group. So for the sake of argument, let's just accept the fact that there are labels. A non-birder, or anyone who has seen a movie or TV show depicting birders, knows the stereotype. Wears binoculars around their necks.

Susan Gets Native: Non-sequiterous post

http://susankwilliams.blogspot.com/2010/01/non-sequiterous-post.html

Wednesday, January 13, 2010. I made up that word. Yes, I did. It snowed last week:. I like da snew, Mamma.". I tried not to cuss as the snow fell, giving the kids yet another day off school. It was pretty, as it fell (by southern Ohio standards) in massive amounts. A light, fluffy snow that was easy to plow and keep ahead of. Didn't keep the numbnuts out there from panicking and running off roads all over the area. Empty, for now. Seems to favor the end of January into the beginning of February. Thursday...

Susan Gets Native: Owls and Poetry

http://susankwilliams.blogspot.com/2011/02/owls-and-poetry.html

Tuesday, February 01, 2011. Oh, if you still come to my poor blog, thank you. I think there have been a shortage of really good or funny stories lately, and with it being February now, not much going on in the bird department. The good thing about winter is the start of nesting season for Great Horned Owls. I have been checking my local nest every day, but thus far, no eggs. This got me thinking of a poem by Charles Baudelaire. Les Hiboux. A somewhat haunting poem, yet straining to find light. For he who...

Susan Gets Native: People photos from the Midwest Birding Symposium

http://susankwilliams.blogspot.com/2011/10/people-photos-from-midwest-birding.html

Saturday, October 08, 2011. People photos from the Midwest Birding Symposium. I'm going to spare you my excuses for not updating my blog more. So September brought the Midwest Birding Symposium. In Lakeside, Ohio. My arm got twisted (Thanks, Jeff! And I am so glad I gave in. Not only was it a birding event, it was full of faces I wanted to see, people I love to spend time with, and lots of new and wonderful people to meet. There are a bazillion photos to share.here are about, oh, forty of them. And Greg ...

Skippy is working hard at learning to be a Therapy Dog. Thursday, May 08, 2008. He has a brand new summer clip. Last night was sooo hot for Skippy - he panted instead of sleeping. He's much more comfortable now with his short haircut. I do have to make a quick comment on the ticks this year. Terrible! Posted by kathy at 6:05 PM.

My adventures in the natural world. Birding Resources–Sample Page. June in the Daks, part 2. Birding the Rio Grande Valley–Finally! The Wonders of Santa Cruz Island. October 8, 2013. But, this one Life Bird seemed small potatoes compared to a pelagic trip, an all-day birding trip at sea, promising oodles of sea birds we would never see on land. Fate being what it is, the pelagic trip out of Santa Barbara was cancelled due to lack of participation (hey, Santa Barbara birders! Impassively watched too, comf...

The lamest birder in the world.....: July 2009

http://lamestbirder.blogspot.com/2009_07_01_archive.html

The lamest birder in the world. Tuesday, July 28, 2009. Gotta love them hooters! Today my son and I were invited to visit RAPTOR, Inc. This is a non-profit organization based in SW Ohio. RAPTOR is dedicated to the preservation of birds of prey through rehabilitation, education and conservation. When we arrived at RAPTOR, Lucas's little sponge like brain was full of all kinds of facts, names, and questions for Susan. The third bird was the Biggest and just a Bad Ass! Sylvester the Great Horned Owl. Lucas ...

KatDoc's World: October 2009

http://katdocsworld.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html

Nature, pottery, pets, and me. Thursday, October 29, 2009. I need a bug expert. And, I do mean "bug," as in "true bug" rather than "generic insect." I've got it narrowed down that far, based on the piercing-sucking mouth parts, the half-leathery wings folded in an "X" on the back and the long antenna. Near as I can come, using my handy-dandy Kenn Kaufman insect guide, is variety of Leaf-footed Bugs, genus Acanthocephala. I can't get any closer, either common name or species. Anybody want to chime in here?

littleorangeguy: The Life Of A Tree

http://littleorangeguy.blogspot.com/2014/03/the-life-of-tree.html

What's happening in sara and kelly's neck of the woods, in the upper outer beach. Sunday, March 23, 2014. The Life Of A Tree. In 2002, Kelly and I bought an old house in Toronto's east end. A 72 year old house, in fact, and along with it came a 72 year old silver maple, which dominated our backyard. About the worst I could say about the tree is that, between its shade and the large numbers of squirrels who lived in its 100 foot branches, it wasn't that good for our tomato crop. Hermit Thrush , House Finc...

littleorangeguy: January 2014

http://littleorangeguy.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html

What's happening in sara and kelly's neck of the woods, in the upper outer beach. Saturday, January 25, 2014. The Stones Shout Out. If, like me, you think that history is a back-and-forth between what happened in the past and how we understand it, then the National Mall in Washington DC is a wonderful place to explore. The Lincoln Memorial, finally dedicated in 1922 after some 60 years of debate and false starts on how to memorialize the 16th President, dominates the landscape. Continue along the tidal b...

littleorangeguy: Birding Madness, v. 2014

http://littleorangeguy.blogspot.com/2014/05/baillie-birdathon-2014.html

What's happening in sara and kelly's neck of the woods, in the upper outer beach. Monday, May 19, 2014. Birding Madness, v. 2014. Saturday, May 17, 8:20 am - the start of our very successful 2014 Baillie Birdathon. Despite the temperature (5 degrees C - Atomic Fireball weather) we decided to spend a couple of hours at Tommy Thompson Park on the Leslie Spit and then come back home to see what we'd get in our back yard. "A couple of hours" turned into the best part of a day. Tree growing around concrete.

littleorangeguy: June 2012

http://littleorangeguy.blogspot.com/2012_06_01_archive.html

What's happening in sara and kelly's neck of the woods, in the upper outer beach. Sunday, June 17, 2012. The Killdeer and the Mockingbird. Two years ago, birds were not on my radar. I recognized the basics: gulls, pigeons, crows, cardinals, blue jays, and robins. Then there were all those brown birds and some black birds and the occasional colourful bird Sara would point out to me that would register for about two seconds. I didn't really think too much about them or what they were doing. Where it flies ...
