SilverLining - about a New England pond. Reflections, by an amateur naturalist and photographer, about pond life. Friday, September 2, 2011. I thought I was on to something unusual when I came upon this pair of birds yesterday. Such distinct markings - the flecks of black on the brown body, the black mark on the chest, the stroke of red on the head, the mustache, the long beak. I have no memory of having seen it before. I couldn't wait to consult my Stokes Field Guide to the Birds of North America.

SilverLining - about a New England pond: Male and Female Baltimore Oriole and Their Nest

SilverLining - about a New England pond. Reflections, by an amateur naturalist and photographer, about pond life. Wednesday, June 6, 2012. Male and Female Baltimore Oriole and Their Nest. I love the nest of the Baltimore Oriole. Woven like an intricate basket, it suspends freely in the shelter of leafy branches. The winds and rain of late spring can batter it and knock it about, but it is fastened so well, it remains in place. Above and below are photos I took today of the mother oriole at the nest.

SilverLining - about a New England pond: American Robin Hatchlings!

SilverLining - about a New England pond. Reflections, by an amateur naturalist and photographer, about pond life. Thursday, May 26, 2011. And now, much to my dismay, the most common of birds, the American robin, has captured me in a way I cannot believe. It may as well be that I've become struck by the presence of squirrels! How can this ever-present bird have finally be compelling to me after decades of taking it for granted. I believe this is The Year of the American Robin! In the course of three days,...

SilverLining - about a New England pond. Reflections, by an amateur naturalist and photographer, about pond life. Thursday, March 22, 2012. Mother Nature Pulls Out the Stops. Today was the first full day of spring and today was my birthday. Mother Nature pulled out all the stops and gave me a glorious day at the pond. It was so beautiful, I went for two walks. If you follow SilverLining you might recall that when I posted about. Fish by the scores are swimming about - so early in the season! And in the p...

SilverLining - about a New England pond. Reflections, by an amateur naturalist and photographer, about pond life. Thursday, May 26, 2011. For three days, there has been a "running of the tadpoles" occurring at one fifteen-foot span of water along the shoreline. On the first day, it was like a swarm - a dark cloud of them covering an area the size of a trash can lid, as the image below shows. Labels: pictures of tadpoles in a pond. SilverLining - about a New England pond: December 2012

SilverLining - about a New England pond. Reflections, by an amateur naturalist and photographer, about pond life. Sunday, December 2, 2012. A Time For Every Season. Through the four seasons of each year, from winter 2007 until spring 2012, I documented in this blog (as an amateur naturalist and photographer) the natural life in and around the small pond in the photo above. Life circumstances had brought me to a home near the pond and life circumstances caused me to leave my home near the pond. Images in ...

SilverLining - about a New England pond: Spicebush Swallowtail Butterfly
http://www.silverlining-marymcavoy.com/2012/05/spicebush-swallowtail-butterfly.html
SilverLining - about a New England pond. Reflections, by an amateur naturalist and photographer, about pond life. Friday, May 18, 2012. I think I've seen this butterfly in past years (or perhaps the Eastern Black Swallowtail), maybe two other times. It had a frenetic movement, flying erratically, never alighting for more than a second. Taking its picture was nearly impossible. At last, it flew directly into the woods alongside the pond, and after it had gone about 30 feet, I lost sight of it. This seems ...
