Swimming in the old Orange Free State - or the Orange River Colony (ORC) as it was known when joining SAASU. In Bloemfontien the Arthur Natahn pool. Was built in the early 1900s, and the 50m heated Olympic Stadium Pool in 1968, while Kroonstad delivered a number of Springboks like Jannie and Pietie Horn. Coaches like Frank Gray. And Santa van Jaarsveld. Who coached at Eunice Girls. For many years, produced many Springboks. Stadion swembad - Bloemfontein. Oranje Vrystaat swemspan 1966. Linda Smit - 1976.

South African Map of swimming pools. Aquatic sports need suitable bodies of water - which were, and still are, in short supply in South Africa. The perception of sunny South Africa belies the fact that most of the interior experiences temperatures below freezing in winter, with outdoor pools being too cold for swimming for at least 6 months of the year. Santa van Jaarsveld (neé Pienaar) graduated from Pretoria High School for Girls, and has swum coached in South Africa for 42 years. She was an Orange Freestate swimmer with the Bloemfontein Otters. Club and coached Eunice Girls High School. For 11 years and later moved to Stellenbosch, where she coaches the university team. The last South African Aquatic championships to be held by SAASU - at its old scenic venue in Newlands, Cape Town, where nationals was always a vibrant and exciting event. After this gala the venue has deteriorated and has never again been used to host nationals. Unfortunately the whole event seems has deteriorated, as a 2015 quote from Roland Schoeman.
