ManYana Ltd, Achieving Tomorrow, Today. Education, training and consultancy. http:/ www.manyanaeducation.co.uk. Sunday, 27 July 2014. An additional level in SOLO taxonomy. Solo has, via a great deal of research into students' thinking identified itself as having the following level. It seems to me that to do that one has to have some deep understanding of the underlying structure of the now related knowledge. What are the features that the related knowledge is connected by? The cat sat on the mat. I woul...

ManYana Ltd, Achieving Tomorrow, Today. Education, training and consultancy. http:/ www.manyanaeducation.co.uk. Friday, 15 August 2014. Going SOLO - An English teacher's experience of using SOLO. Having been persuaded of the limitations of Bloom’s Taxonomy and introduced to the benefits of SOLO through an OTP course, I decided the only way to really find out was to experiment with it myself. Lesson one involved introducing the class to SOLO. I relied upon YouTube and its explanation of SOLO through L...

Thoughts on the politics of education. For TES: “There is no workload crisis – just politics”. April 26, 2015. My latest Opinion piece considers the evidence for a “teacher workload crisis” and posits that much of the activist pressure to view this as a system-wide breakdown (as distinct from individual examples in diverse schools) is driven by more ideological considerations. You can read the rest over on the TES website…. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. Address never made public).

Thoughts on the politics of education. Monthly Archives: February, 2014. The Defenestration of Store Street. February 2, 2014. Don’t mess with the Baroness. Is designated “a stub”*. She doesn’t even come up first when you Google that entry. And that’s precisely as it should be: Sally Morgan was a significant part of what made the Blair government work, and a crucial component of how she did that was by never being the person in the public eye. Boredom ( mostly feigned by political commentators. But, and ...

ManYana Ltd: Can I improve my students' memory?
http://manyana-education.blogspot.com/2014/11/can-i-improve-my-students-memory.html
ManYana Ltd, Achieving Tomorrow, Today. Education, training and consultancy. http:/ www.manyanaeducation.co.uk. Wednesday, 5 November 2014. Can I improve my students' memory? Treading of dangerous waters, here. But the following is a distillation of what I have read and hopefully understood about memory. At some point your children will take exams and the more they can remember, facts and processes - know what and know hoy - the better they are likely to do in the exam, other things being equal. So the f...

Part one is here. What I do not mean by engagement. Engagement - engaged to be married. Engagement - I have an engagement. I need to go now. A meeting, event of some sort. Engagement - I have been engaged to deliver an INSET Day at Bog Standard Comprehensive School. The last one is the one which I think is missing the p...

ManYana Ltd: Why do I need a teacher?
http://manyana-education.blogspot.com/2015/04/why-do-i-need-teacher.html
ManYana Ltd, Achieving Tomorrow, Today. Education, training and consultancy. http:/ www.manyanaeducation.co.uk. Monday, 27 April 2015. Why do I need a teacher? I was thinking about what it was that a teacher did. A bit like the ‘If we have Google, why do we need a teacher? But what actually matters in tree identification? Is it leaf shape, or seed pods, or bark? What else. Will any one of these do or do different identification features work at different times of the year? Does one actually exist? As a n...

To Miss with Love. The resuscitated thoughts of Katharine Birbalsingh, Headmistress at Michaela. If you work at Michaela, it would not be unusual to get an email like this from the Head:. Today is Thursday. Before the end of the week, you must say something to someone that you would not have otherwise said. Start with, ‘So Katharine said that I should say, so I’m saying it…’. The Headmistress at Michaela never gets any stars on the chart. And that’s because she is always candid. Hard to tak...That’...

To Miss with Love. The resuscitated thoughts of Katharine Birbalsingh, Headmistress at Michaela. To all the teachers out there…. I remember what it was like… feeling under siege, trying to do things differently in my own little classroom, rolling my eyes on inset days where power point, sugar paper and ‘fun’ ruled…. Here is one message I got today that brought tears to my own eyes. She’s happy again, Katharine. She’s smiling and inspired and feeling that she can regain some control. November 29, 2016.

To Miss with Love. The resuscitated thoughts of Katharine Birbalsingh, Headmistress at Michaela. Here is my Head of Science holding up a new quote for my office. Richard Branson joins Muhammad Ali, Maya Angelou, Thomas Sowell and Mahatma Gandhi. He has large shoes to fill. Head of Science, picked up the poster to pose. Why? Because I asked her to. Where did it come from? Ghataura (at another school) mentioned the quote the other night because Doug Lemov. How do you know? 8221; she suddenly shouted. &...
