Taren Wanderer: Cultural & political influences in West Africa

http://tarenwanderer.blogspot.com/2010/12/cultural-political-influences-in-west.html

Sunday, December 19, 2010. Cultural and political influences in West Africa. A few notes on my observations of cultural and political influences on West Africa:. Germany, for some reason, has a lot of well-marked development projects in the Gambia. Not sure why. I met a real live person, who spoke enough English to have a real conversation with,. Who had not heard of Barack Obama! In Ghana, several times I was shown massive construction projects (usually sports stadiums) that were introduced with the sen...

Saturday, December 25, 2010. Christmas Update: In Greencastle! Had a great 36 hours in Washington DC. Highlights included catching up with Aaron Strauss, Colleen and Alex Denny, and of course the Rev House crew of Brandzel, Michelle, Padler, and Seth. Arrived in Greencastle a few nights ago in time for our annual Christmas caroling party, where my reunion with Kalila and parents Faiza and Samad took place! Then yesterday we took them to the Indianapolis Children's Museum. West African reading list.

Taren Wanderer: Kalila in Greencastle

http://tarenwanderer.blogspot.com/2010/12/kalila-in-greencastle.html

Saturday, December 25, 2010. Here's a photo of Kalila, Faiza, my mom, and my dad, in our kitchen. Faiza has just presented my parents with presents from Uncle Negro - beautiful Ghanaian masks that now occupy pride of place in our living room! This is right before our annual Christmas party - I don't have good pictures of Kalila during the party on my own camera but other people do and I'll post them when we have them. No Hurry, No Worry: June 2011

http://alysinmali.blogspot.com/2011_06_01_archive.html

No Hurry, No Worry. My Experiences in Mali as a Fulbright Student. Sunday, June 26, 2011. The Winds of Change. Rain last week at my apartment. The wind was a relief on a night when my A/C unit didn’t seem to want to blow cool air, but it made for unsuccessful blogging. I didn’t get much past the title of this post before my electricity flickered and then everything went black. It was really coming down! The winds have really been picking up in Bamako and with them, come the rains! I actually started this...

No Hurry, No Worry: 'Tis the Season?

http://alysinmali.blogspot.com/2010/11/tis-season.html

No Hurry, No Worry. My Experiences in Mali as a Fulbright Student. Monday, November 29, 2010. This morning, I started listening to Christmas music. It’s not December 1. My holiday season began two weeks ago with the celebration of the Muslim holiday, Tabaski. Http:/ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tabaski. For weeks leading up to the “fete,” it was all anyone talked about. If you took a taxi and asked the driver, “Ca va? 8221; (Only a little ok? Oumou and me dressed in our holiday finest. Finally, at around 5:30, ...

http://alysinmali.blogspot.com/2011/11/mali-on-move.html

No Hurry, No Worry. My Experiences in Mali as a Fulbright Student. Thursday, November 24, 2011. Mali on the Move. A quick aside to just say that travel capabilities these days are pretty crazy! The fact that this is possible… or that I can go from Mali to France to Greencastle in a matter of hours is pretty insane. While the physical change in location is quick and easy, it’s the mental change of place that is a little harder…. Dogon masks and art at Musee du Quai Branly. As well as some interesting stuf...

No Hurry, No Worry. My Experiences in Mali as a Fulbright Student. Wednesday, August 11, 2010. A First Time for Everything. But I don’t want to get ahead of myself! Right now I am hanging out at home and working at Chief’s (a BBQ type restaurant that is a 10 minute walk from my house). I have made a couple of short trips this summer (to DC and Chicago…. And soon to Louisville and Denver! And now—what all of you can do to help me! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). This blog is my way of communicating with famil...

No Hurry, No Worry. My Experiences in Mali as a Fulbright Student. Tuesday, August 30, 2011. This evening around 6pm, after a day of apartment hunting with a friend, working on my computer on an NGO project, and catching up with phone calls after the weekend, I psych myself up and set out to run. I pass by my guardian and his family sitting on their patio downstairs. 8220;I ni ce,”. 8220;K’an ben sooni.”. I’ll be back soon! The newly paved road where I start my runs. No Hurry, No Worry. My Experiences in Mali as a Fulbright Student. Tuesday, November 29, 2011. Holiday Season One Year Later. With Aunt Pam and Mom in front of the Sacre Coeur Basilica. Much has changed in the past year, and I am thankful for all of the experiences I’ve had and the many interesting people who have come into my life in Mali, the US, and in between! After a great week in Paris. Dinner at Chief’s was delicious, as always, and it felt great to be home! Kendi and Anna made me a banner! Of cou...

No Hurry, No Worry: Coming Home

http://alysinmali.blogspot.com/2011/10/coming-home.html

No Hurry, No Worry. My Experiences in Mali as a Fulbright Student. Saturday, October 22, 2011. All the ladies at the Green Turtle! Ready to eat some lobster! I traveled with a fun group of female Peace Corps volunteers from Mali. When a new friend, Ashley, told me she was going to Ghana a couple months ago at a party, I expressed interest and she invited me along. I’m not sure if she knew how serious I was about really coming, but we made it happen! Inside the Cape Coast Castle's old slave quarters.

No Hurry, No Worry. My Experiences in Mali as a Fulbright Student. Tuesday, February 22, 2011. There's No Place Like Home' or 'Change is Good'. It has been so long since I offered an update on things here in Bamako. Honestly, the time seems to have flown and crept by at the same time! It is hard to believe that I am 4 ½ months through a 10 month grant! Happy New Year from Siby! Love, Ryan, Sonja, Gaelle, Bodil,. Zak, Alys, and George. No Hurry, No Worry. My Experiences in Mali as a Fulbright Student. Thursday, September 30, 2010. I just successfully completed my first day back in Mali…. Okay, I slept through most of it, but I definitely accomplished some things! My first accomplishment was making it here. Trust me, when you travel for 40 hours alone through three continents, just making it somewhere feels like a major feat! My last week of trip preparations flew by, and my family and friends gave me a great send-off! I also tried not ...
