Ken's Techno Tidbits. Tube of Terror post-mortem. So in the end, we didn’t win. We did avoid hitting other vehicles, or crashing into a hay bale, or crashing into somebody (like a race volunteer), unlike a few other vehicles I could mention. And we looked good…. Turns out my near-death power slide on Nimrod during a test run caused the rear axle frame to bend, leading to toe-out (or toe-in? I can never remember). Ken's Techno Tidbits. Kaweah Basin Hike 2015. July 20, 2015. To make things more interesting, we decided to do it as a trans-Sierra trip, crossing through remote Kaweah Basin and meeting up with friends in the Big Arroyo, before exiting via Mineral King. Since it’s a one-way, issue #1 was how to get there. I originally made plans to use the Eastern Sierra Transit. Speaking of the shuttle, we used Paul Fretheim of East Side Sierra Shuttle. The above photo is from the hiker’s trailhead, which is a bi...

Ken's Techno Tidbits. The Tube of Terror. March 27, 2012. June 16th is the second annual Nevada City Adult Soapbox Derby. Where grown men (and some women) raise money for Pioneer Park, by spending ridiculous amounts of time building gravity-powered vehicles. Here’s the local hospital entry from last year:. This year, since I’ve got so much free time, I decided to put together a team. Thus was born the “Tube of Terror”, sponsored by Scale Unlimited. You are currently browsing the Ken's Techno Tidbits.

Jeff on Cloud Computing: April 2008
http://jeffeastman.blogspot.com/2008_04_01_archive.html
Jeff on Cloud Computing. Thursday, April 17, 2008. I Encounter Scary Math. My first programming experiences on the Mahout. Project were pretty straightforward. I was working on a problem that seemed to need some clustering - grouping data that is "similar". I listened to a couple of excellent Google Tutorials that explained how to use Map/Reduce to implement Canopy Clustering. Then, Ted Dunning. An active contributor to the Hadoop and Mahout mailing lists, introduced me to Dirichlet Process Clustering.

Ken's Techno Tidbits. How a Programmer Works on a Soapbox Derby Racer. April 27, 2012. Once I knew I had a winning ticket for the race, I did what any programmer would do when getting started. No, I didn’t make the t-shirt. I wrote a simulation. Step #1 was to get the profile of the race course. Google Earth has nice support for generating a profile from a path:. And then I could turn these equations into code:. Finally, I could generate results with different weights, and graph them. April 25, 2012.

Ken's Techno Tidbits. Sufferfest at the Banff Mountain Film Festival. April 6, 2014. Every year we travel to Downieville. To watch the Banff Mountain Film Festival. Movies as part of their annual tour. Downieville might be their smallest stop in the world, with a theater that seats about 200 good friends. It’s an hour drive on windy roads from where I live in Nevada City, but once we’re there it’s always a fun party, including the annual intermission frisbee-fest. In 1988 Robin Ingraham was climbing with...
