Katrina the Tester: June 2015
http://katrinatester.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html
Wednesday, 24 June 2015. A pairing experiment for sharing knowledge between agile teams. Over the past month I've started running a pairing experiment in my organisation. The primary purpose of this experiment is to share knowledge between testers who are working in different agile teams, testing different applications and platforms. After researching pair testing. In between iterations, the team will offer their feedback on the experiment itself and the pairing sessions that they have completed. As ...

Katrina the Tester: Mobile Testing Taster
http://katrinatester.blogspot.com/2015/07/mobile-testing-taster.html
Thursday, 16 July 2015. I recently ran a one-hour hands-on workshop to give a group of 20 testers a taste of mobile application testing. This mobile testing taster included brainstorming mobile-specific test ideas, sharing some mobile application testing mnemonics, hands-on device testing, and a brief demonstration of device emulation. With an iOS app, an android app, and a website optimised for mobile. I asked those who were able to bring a laptop, in order to compare mobile and web functionality. After...

Katrina the Tester: Test Strategy Retrospective
http://katrinatester.blogspot.com/2014/04/test-strategy-retrospective.html
Tuesday, 22 April 2014. Once an agile team is established and has started delivering working software, a test strategy retrospective can help to determine whether everyone in the team knows what the test strategy is, and agrees on which aspects of the strategy have been implemented. Why do a test strategy retrospective? As a simplified example, a tester may have depth of skill in testing with a breadth of skill across business analysis and development. Those from a development background may test that so...

Katrina the Tester: Test Manager in Agile
http://katrinatester.blogspot.com/2014/04/test-manager-in-agile.html
Wednesday, 9 April 2014. Test Manager in Agile. I was recently asked by a colleague "What is the role of a Test Manager in agile? This was my response. Instead I see the Test Manager role as evolving to a higher-level position that includes:. Facilitation of inter-team communication across many agile projects within an organisation. Presenting an aggregate view of testing utilisation to high level management. Personal support, mentoring, and professional development for testers. I think the agile test ma...

Katrina the Tester: Notes from Nordic Testing Days 2015
http://katrinatester.blogspot.com/2015/06/notes-from-nordic-testing-days-2015.html
Wednesday, 17 June 2015. Notes from Nordic Testing Days 2015. Nordic Testing Days 2015. Was my first European testing conference, both as an attendee and a speaker. I really enjoyed my time in Estonia. It was fantastic to listen to, and learn from, a set of speakers that I have never heard before. I also enjoyed meeting a number of people that I have previously only known through Twitter. This was a repeat of a talk I gave several times last year. SPINing the Post-Conference Blues. Presented some fundame...

Katrina the Tester: Dominos to illustrate communication in pair testing
http://katrinatester.blogspot.com/2015/05/dominos-to-illustrate-communication-in.html
Thursday, 28 May 2015. Dominos to illustrate communication in pair testing. I recently ran a one hour workshop to introduce pair testing to my team. I wanted to make the session interactive rather than theoretical however, having done the research. I struggled to find any practical tips for training people in how to pair effectively. Having created something original to suit my purpose, I thought I would share my approach in case it is useful for others. So, what is the essence of pair testing? Then they...

Katrina the Tester: Collecting domain-specific test heuristics
http://katrinatester.blogspot.com/2015/05/collecting-domain-specific-test.html
Saturday, 9 May 2015. Collecting domain-specific test heuristics. In any testing team there are varying degrees of knowledge about the application under test. One of the things on my mind recently has been how we transfer domain knowledge between testers with varied experience. The demographics of the team offer a strong opportunity for transfer of domain knowledge. When I map out the number of people in the team against their years of experience, there's a skyscraper of new staff. Having experienced som...

Katrina the Tester: Reporting session based testing
http://katrinatester.blogspot.com/2014/03/reporting-session-based-testing.html
Sunday, 2 March 2014. Reporting session based testing. I was recently asked about the reporting available for session based testing. I was the test manager of a project for five half days, or four hours each day. The project was a learning exercise and the product under test was the TradeMe Sandbox. A test version of the most-popular online auction site in New Zealand. Team for selling an item, green. Team for feedback on a purchase, and purple. For the team to work from. The board showed which piece...

Katrina the Tester: Generic Testing Personas
http://katrinatester.blogspot.com/2015/01/generic-testing-personas.html
Monday, 19 January 2015. Personas are a tool to consciously adopt the habits and feelings of different people. When used during testing, they can help us to discover different types of problems. Traditionally persona are developed for a specific application, each describing a rich background and context that shape the actions of user. I think there is value in using the same concept to model stereotypical software users for testing purposes alone. Stick to the quickest workflow through the application.

Katrina the Tester: Formality in open season at a peer conference
http://katrinatester.blogspot.com/2015/08/formality-in-open-season-at-peer.html
Wednesday, 5 August 2015. Formality in open season at a peer conference. I attended the fifth annual Kiwi Workshop for Software Testing (KWST5) this week. Overall, I really enjoyed spending two days discussing the role of testing with a group of passionate people. I took a lot from the content. But it's not what. We discussed that I want to examine here, instead it's how. My husband thinks some exchanges in open season at #KWST5. Sound unprofessional. In retrospect, maybe they were? I'm thinking about it.
