Beware of rocks in the living room – show folks

Notes on community theatre. Beware of rocks in the living room. February 29, 2016. April 8, 2016. I have rocks in my house. Big ones. That might seem strange to most people, but not to show folks. These rocks are going on a Greek holiday soon. Paper mache over chicken wire from Toronto theatre arts teacher Roberta Belfry. They’re dressed as Canadian rocks now. But they will be getting a face lift soon for the Greek island set of Shirley Valentine this spring. How do prop makers do it? You can learn how t...

Notes on community theatre. Can I call you back? I’m watching a play. February 18, 2016. April 8, 2016. You might hear that muttered when a phone rings during a show. Or worse. Most actors and crew have been there. You’re in the middle of a scene, and suddenly there’s a new sound cue. Your prop phone isn’t ringing. And it’s not coming from the booth. Right Someone in the audience is wanted on the phone. This can lead to grunting among other patrons and heavy sighs backstage. See Good Morning America.

Notes on community theatre. 2 jennifers = 1 shirley valentine. April 7, 2016. April 8, 2016. By Trevor Smith Diggins. I’m directing a play with two actors in the title role. And they’re both named Jennifer. How’s that gonna work? There were a few raised eyebrows when I pitched the idea. Some people asked me if I’d thought this through. The answer is yes. And uh, no. I decided to cast two actors. This time. Theatre is all about making strong choices, right? It turns out, I’ve got two very good actors.

Building Great Neighbourhoods in Toronto. Paint Me a Neighbourhood. April 8, 2016. April 10, 2016. Throughout this blog, I’ve taken every opportunity to integrate local murals that correspond with the topic of the post. This method is a testament to the variety of murals in the Junction and their ability to represent key elements of the neighbourhood. Take the mural at the underpass on Dupont street, featured here. Building Great Neighbourhoods in Toronto. Why My Neighbourhood is Great? And How Yours Could be Too. February 13, 2016. February 14, 2016. First let’s address the question mark. A “great,” neighbourhood is very much a subjective concept. Each person incorporates their own preferences and biases when making their evaluation. In this and future posts, “great,” is used as both a subjective criteria of evaluation as well as a term to inspire–great is not complacent. Photo Credit: www.pixabay.com. The good ne...

Building Great Neighbourhoods in Toronto. The power of a petition! February 16, 2016. Last month, it was. That the greater Junction Triangle may one day become Toronto’s newest brewery district. Rightfully so, as the Junction triangle, and especially my area to the western edge known simply as the Junction, contains a plethora of craft breweries and restaurants serving tasty pints of the local standard. To end the local option of prohibition, area residents needed to gather 6 000 signatures in order to p...

Building Great Neighbourhoods in Toronto. Preserving the Past to Meet the Needs of the Future. April 10, 2016. April 10, 2016. Spring is in the air in the Junction and it’s hard not to be excited. After living in the area for over eight months, I’ve been waiting with great anticipation to see what would become come of the Campell Block. Before the neighbourhood was incorporated as the City of West Toronto in 1908 only to amalgamate with the City of Toronto in 1909. I’m of the mind that controlled develop...

Building Great Neighbourhoods in Toronto. There’s No Wrong Side of the Tracks: Guest Feature on the Junction Triangle. March 22, 2016. April 11, 2016. In an area where residents are quick to point out that their community is distinct from their neighbours to the west of the tracks, it’s fitting that I find myself walking east to the triangle when I’m looking for something different.
