Chicago Chess Blog: 8/24/14 - 8/31/14

Notes on chess in Chicago. Friday, August 29, 2014. A trap in the Quaade Gambit. What on earth is the Quaade Gambit, you ask? It's a line of the King's Gambit that begins 1.e4 e5 2.f4 exf4 3.Nf3 g5 4.Nc3! Deviating from the usual Kieseritzky prescription of 4.h4 g4 5.Ne5. The line is named for a 19th-century Dutch sea captain (not to be confused with Captain Evans, a Welshman). The natural response is 4.g4 5.Ne5 Qh4 , when White responds with the surprising 6.g3! Chicago Chess Blog: 2/1/15 - 2/8/15
http://chicagochess.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html
Notes on chess in Chicago. Tuesday, February 3, 2015. Still another Englund Gambit trap. I have previously written several posts about traps in the Englund Gambit. Or, to be charitable, 1.d4 e5? There are two "official" refutations of the main line of the gambit: after 2.dxe5 Nc6 3.Nf3 Qe7, one begins with 4.Bf4 (or 4.Bg5) Qb4 5.Bd2 Qxc3 6.Nc3! The other with 4.Qd5. As I've previously noted. 7Qd2 Bxc3 8.Qxc3 Qc1#. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). ICA Youth Chess Resources. The Week in Chess.

The Knights of Castle Kimbark. About chess and other things, in Hyde Park, Chicago, and everywhere else. Thursday, March 26, 2015. What do you do when the pawn structure is all jammed up? Sacrifice to open it up, I guess. Posted by Tom Panelas. Cute, but why did you allow Black to close the center? Instead of 14.Bd3? 14cxd6 en passant wins. There is now a juicy hole for a horse on c5. Because Im a patzer. Thats what we do. Black was in on it, as you see. ;-). Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Jeremiah'...

The Knights of Castle Kimbark. About chess and other things, in Hyde Park, Chicago, and everywhere else. Monday, July 11, 2011. Storm of the Century. We were among more than 800,000 people in the Chicago area who lost power today after a thunderstorm that lasted about 20 minutes but did more damage than any storm in at least 13 years. We're among the lucky ones: our lights are back on. Some people may have to wait days. Posted by Tom Panelas. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Ray School Home Page.

Notes on chess in Chicago. Sunday, July 11, 2010. Rosen holds Robson to draw! In the first round of the 2010 U.S. Junior Invitational Championship, NM Eric Rosen of Illinois, the lowest-rated player, held the highest-rated player, GM Ray Robson - rated 404 points higher! To a draw. Or maybe that should be "Robson held Rosen to a draw"? More information and games from the tournaments are available on the USCF website. Here is Eric's game:.
