Is it the media desperate for a headline or retailers eager to persuade us to spend more before stores close for a whole 24 hours over Christmas? Needless to say, there was not a hint of panic in my dealings on Saturday. Serene in the kitchen. This frugal approach also means the dessert is a little lighter and not cloyingly sweet.

Wine, food and other pleasures. Thursday, 11 December 2014. Chilli venison casserole with chocolate. This is based on a recipe from Slow Cooking: Best New Recipes. By Annette Yates and Norma Miller which doesn't look or sound terribly inspiring, but has become my slow cooking bible. It serves 6 people. 900g stewing venison, cut into cubes. 3 rashers of streaky bacon. 12 shallots, peeled and sliced into quarters. 2 red chillies, seeds removed, finely sliced. 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg. 1/4 tsp ground allspice.

If I'm not using home-made stock (usually chicken) and I need to pep things up I use Marigold powdered stock or Oxo cubes, so I didn't mind giving these little pots of seasoning paste a whirl. I did a bit of cycling (I managed to clock up over 100 miles in this past week), been horse riding twice and bought a kick-ass pair of sandals.🙂. Coffee in the Square. September 07, 2012. One of the 'weeds' that grows in my veg plot, in the gaps between the pavings and in every gutter up here is wild celery. The wild version has a sharp celery taste and is firmer than shop-bought celery. I've never found the hollow stems up to much in a salad, but the leaves are great. This year I've tried blanching a few stems, by wrapping them up in kitchen towel rolls! This soup seems to be a delicious way of using the whole plant. Handful of new potatoes.

Wine, food and other pleasures. Friday, 28 February 2014. Chablis to Beaujolais: an epic journey for wine lovers. After breakfast in the sunny garden of the Hostellerie des Clos. We returned to the car to continue our journey. Our next destination would be Lancié in Beaujolais. For a two night stay before finishing our first week in France in the southern Rhône near Châteauneuf-du-Pâpe. Named after this road in San Francisco with an appropriately Burgundian wine list. We stopped for lunch in Beaune.
