small moments like these | No Ordinary Ostrich
https://annahopkinsblogs.wordpress.com/2013/09/20/small-moments-like-these
Musings from above the sand. Small moments like these. September 20, 2013. September 20, 2013. I feel myself tense up as the wasp lands on my arm, and what flashes across my brain is: this wasp isn’t here of her own accord. I invited her in. I opened that window. And now I’m rejecting it. What else do I create openings for and subsequently curse? How common it is for us to forget that we are not in control, and to blame the world for things that we’ve really chosen for ourselves. ROASTED SUMMER STONE FRUIT and RICOTTA TOASTS. I could go on forever, really - a mess of seasonal fruits gets me cranking like no other thing. I present you with one delicious option, a resplendent little treat both sweet and a touch savory - perfect for crunching on as the day goes by. Roasted Summer Fruit Toasts. 4-6 slices crusty bread, toasted. 1 cup whole milk ricotta. 2 cups sliced summer fruit (cherries, grapes, nectarines, anything will do). A drizzle of olive oil. Pinch of brown sugar. التي لديه...

Monday, September 23, 2013. Today, a couple of other home cooks and I will be video-chatting live with Fuchsia Dunlop as a part of this month's New York Times' Recipe Lab. Dunlop is an expert on a number of China's regional cuisines and author of a fantastic travel memoir and three cookbooks, including Every Grain of Rice. We'll be talking with her about Chinese cooking and a dish from EGR. We all made, Gong Bao Chicken. Tune in to Recipe Lab. At 3 pm Eastern. It's going to be great! For the video chat, ...
butter tree: Retreat to the kitchen
http://butter-tree.blogspot.com/2013/11/retreat-to-kitchen.html
Wednesday, November 13, 2013. Retreat to the kitchen. Still, I haven't allowed myself to take on anything too consuming. Spending time on something extravagant- a layer cake, another batch of preserves- would at this point, I think, just leave me guilt-stricken. So, I've stuck mostly to simple things, things to help keep me humming through the day, like this sunny delicata-squash hummus. Crumbled bacon and chives? I don't know, but I can't wait to try. This recipe, by the way comes from Modern Farmer.
butter tree: Something enduring
http://butter-tree.blogspot.com/2013/07/something-enduring.html
Friday, July 26, 2013. I know, I know, another batch of preserves- what gives. Why, indeed, complicate matters? That was, for a long time, my attitude towards summer fruit. Berries, peaches, and plums- why fuss with them when they're good as they are? On a sticky July day, you can't do much better for yourself than eating a cold plum over the kitchen sink, juices running down your arms. So why trouble yourself with more? If you want to get the flavour of his work. It's heady.). Cherry Preserves with Plums.
butter tree: What was missing
http://butter-tree.blogspot.com/2013/07/what-was-missing.html
Tuesday, July 9, 2013. Awhile ago, I finally picked up Luisa Weiss' memoir, My Berlin Kitchen. You really get the sense from Luisa that Berlin's soul is in its kitchens, with its women and men tending to bubbling pots and deep bowls. How better, after all, could you get to know a city than by taking a trip to an overgrown orchard at its outskirts- probably given up during the Cold War- and picking plums for Pflaumenmus. I can't really think of any. From Luisa Weiss' My Berlin Kitchen. Clean and dry an op...
butter tree: A kitchen garden
http://butter-tree.blogspot.com/2013/10/a-kitchen-garden.html
Sunday, October 13, 2013. Fava Bean Agnolotti with Curry Emulsion. Adapted from Thomas Keller's The French Laundry Cookbook. It took me a few tries to really understand how to get the shape right (which is not to say that my agnolotti are at all perfect). I think that written instructions can only help so much. At some point, things just clicked for me. But you might want to take a look at the Kitchn's s tep-by-step agnolotti-making tutorial. 200 g / 1 2/3 cup all-purpose flour. 6 large egg yolks. Mound ...
The Yellow House » Skillet greens & beans with anchovy breadcrumbs
http://casayellow.com/2015/05/20/skillet-greens-beans-with-anchovy-breadcrumbs
Wednesday, 20 May 2015 32 comments. Skillet greens & beans with anchovy breadcrumbs. I am a big fan of my annual. Greens are easy. They come early in the season. Reward-to-risk ratio is high. This year, I direct seeded a mix of lettuces, kale, and mustard greens into a bed close to the kitchen. They come up fast and thick, and by the time we got back from our honeymoon in Maine (! It was time to start harvesting. Skillet beans & greens with anchovy breadcrumbs. 4 anchovy filets, finely chopped. 4 cups ba...

The Wind Bag | Diary of an Ornery Consumer
Diary of an Ornery Consumer. The Demerits of Missing Toes – 2014 Writer’s Digest Short Story Competition Winner. June 15, 2016. I met Titus Marshall when I was two weeks shy of seventh grade and visiting my dull aunt and uncle down the country. When I came upon him, he was with a pack of kids wandering around Bloody Creek at the edge of town looking for a toe that had gone missing. A small fellow, about my age, pointed at a big boy sitting by the creek, My brother’s toe. It came off right about here.

Friday, October 24, 2014. Making your life a priority! I hope each one of you had a fantastic week and have some fun plans for the weekend! Maybe some pumpkin patch fun? Tell me below what you will be doing this weekend! I have been doing a lot of thinking about a major excuse that I see so many people use, and I use, too! I DONT HAVE TIME! I recently read that in order for you to create a life that you love you must rephrase this thought. It is so simple yet so dramatic! Big difference, right? Think abo...

A Melburnian's wee journey to finding Edinburgh's culinary gems. Monday, 16 January 2012. My last post - from Australia. This is a ridiculously delayed post. In fact, I haven't given this blog much of my time over the last 6 months at all. That's because I left Edinburgh to travel before returning home to Australia, and since this blog is about Edinburgh, well, I can't really keep this blog up. So, this is my last post, unfortunately. Monday, January 16, 2012. Links to this post. Thursday, 9 December 2010.

The Edible Ethic
Compared with what we ought to be, we are only half awake. Our fires are damped, our drafts are checked. We are making use of only a small part of our possible mental and physical resources.". William James, The Energies of Men, Science (1907). I’m not cooking at all lately. One handedness has rendered me rather clumsy in the kitchen. Sure there are the berries on granola in the morning, the occasional piece of toast. Simple stuff. But, year over year, my cooking is down exponentially. In this final rest...
