No seeds, no fruits, no flowers: no problem.: Apomixis in ferns
http://noseeds.blogspot.com/2013/03/apomixis-in-ferns.html
Monday, March 4, 2013. I've been reading an interesting article published last year (2012) in the Journal of Botany ( here. Apomixis and apogamy have long interested botanists because they get at a fairly fundamental question in the evolution of life - is it better to be sexually reproducing or asexually reproducing? The authors of the paper I mention above have also put together a website. Here's a shot of the site:. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). I am a plant evolutionary biologist and Assistant P...
No seeds, no fruits, no flowers: no problem.: Edible Ostrich Ferns
http://noseeds.blogspot.com/2008/04/edible-ostrich-ferns.html
Monday, April 28, 2008. As ferns start to pop up in the spring, one thing on many people's minds is eating them. For those interested parties living in the midwest and northeast, you're in luck! 160;One of the first ferns to emerge in the spring also happens to be edible: Matteuccia struthiopteris. If you're interested in collecting Matteuccia. Fiddleheads yourself, it's very important that you be able to recognize it. There are several other ferns that look similar to Matteucia. Leave a note using the c...
No seeds, no fruits, no flowers: no problem.: Ferns in Belgium
http://noseeds.blogspot.com/2014/08/ferns-in-belgium.html
Sunday, August 31, 2014. Our last stop for fieldwork on our European fern tour was Belgium. We were hosted by Ronnie Viane. Of the Biology faculty at Ghent University, and he shared with us his fabulous home fern garden and extensive personal herbarium collections before taking us out to do fieldwork in the Ardennes. We hiked through some beautiful forests and fields, and ended up at a roadside wall that had more Asplenium. Species in one place than we had seen anywhere else on the trip! I spent most of ...
No seeds, no fruits, no flowers: no problem.: Ferns in the news: weird sex

Friday, February 27, 2015. Ferns in the news: weird sex. Photo by Harry Roskam. It's always a good day when ferns make the news, so the last few weeks have been pretty great! And colleagues have determined that two ferns alive today, but whose ancestors diverged from one another around 60 million years ago, have hybridized to form a new (although sterile) species. The new species is a hybrid between two different genera, Cystopteris. And its name is Cystocarpium roskamianum. And Polystichum lonchitis,.

Friday, January 30, 2015. Las Cruces is particularly fun for the bird life, and many beautiful species show up for the daily offering of bananas outside the dining hall:. And now just a few of the dozens (possibly hundreds) of ferns we saw over the course of three weeks. Tiny sporophytes of Asplenium holophlebium. Sporangia with green spores apparent. Two members of Gleicheniaceae, Sticherus. Darker green) and Gleicheniella. An tree tipup with incredibly dense fern gametophytes. Links to this post. Today...

No seeds, no fruits, no flowers: no problem.: More fiddleheads!
http://noseeds.blogspot.com/2011/05/more-fiddleheads.html
Wednesday, May 11, 2011. Here is a last roundup of photos from the Grant County field trip - an assortment of ferns other than the Osmunda claytoniana. Highlighted in previous posts - and some notes on identifying them when they're still fiddleheads. Above is Asplenium platyneuron. The Ebony Spleenwort, which was long past fiddlehead stage when we saw it, as was this Botrychium. The following two photos are Dryopteris marginalis. One helpful thing with Dryopteris. And also because of the very smooth look...

Monday, September 15, 2014. Pine Rocklands project and field work. A few weeks ago I went on the first field trip for a new project I'm involved in with a colleague here at UF, Ben Baiser. While we intend to collect all 500 species found in the pine rocklands, my main interest is of course the ferns. Here are photos of the fern species we've found there so far, with more still to come! The first time I've seen it in the wild! A tree-load of epiphytic ferns and bromeliads. Florida blue and orange! Todays ...

Fenlaw Family!!
Friday, September 12, 2008. Out of 200 kids thaat tried out with only 3 women speaking roles I got the lead female role. Analisa is the best on her soccer team she scored a goal and is an amazing aggressive player especially since she's half the size as everyone on her team. Jared has soccer games too and he's really a great player! Jared is one of the most-chased boys on the playground and is very proud of it! We're all doing completely fantastic. now!
