A Long Way from the Source. Newer posts →. So, last week I planned on reading a book for review, planning an article, and writing for my novel. None of that got done, as my new job was physically and mentally exhausting. However, I’m working on being less mentally wiped out at the end of the day this week, and also putting my article planning front and centre. Other writings can take a back seat this week. The question you might be asking, at this stage, is “Why are you telling me all this? The overall g...

A Long Way from the Source. Another one bites the dust. →. Once again, I realise that, in order to do any of the writing I need to do (either for courses, or for my ‘novel’) I need to read. How much do I need to read? The answer is always ‘more’. Also, note that I’m avoiding writing by writing about writing. Go me! This entry was posted in Reading. St catherine of siena. A Long Way from the Source. Quick Update →. So, another long-overdue update. All job opportunities fell through, until I had been enrolled at Teachers’ College for two weeks, by which time, I was quite enjoying myself, and so actually turned down a job which was offered. Tomorrow, I begin my first placement in a small high school, and I’m looking forward to seeing. I mean students, very much. There was a great presentation by @MissDtheTeacher. What do you like reading? Quick Update →. You are commenting ...

A Long Way from the Source. Book Club →. Oh, good grief! Medieval-wise, the school I am teaching at uses the Cambridge curriculum, which is not common in NZ. This means that Shakespeare is taught from at least Year 6, and I had. Much fun with my Year 8s and. Last year. And. With the Year 12s. But best of all, this year I am teaching. The Wife of Bath’s Prologue and Tale. So once again, Dear Reader (if you exist), I invite you to join me on a new journey, as I delve into the frustrating, yet fulfilling, w...

Center of Gravitas: Advice for the Newly Hired
http://centerofgravitas.blogspot.com/2009/03/advice-for-newly-hired.html
Friday, March 06, 2009. Advice for the Newly Hired. A few nights ago I had a cocktail with a junior colleague from another department. After an hour, I couldn’t believe the yarn that ze was weaving. Sometimes junior faculty have legitimate concerns and sometimes they have an astounding sense of self entitlement. This was definitely the latter (e.g. “I should have a full year off, with pay! 8211; My research is clearly so much more difficult to accomplish than all of my junior peers! Of my junior colleagu...

A Long Way from the Source. Another one bites the dust. Waiting to teach →. I think it’s safe to say that 2013 was seriously derailed. In many ways. And I am so glad that year is over. One more hour, and there’s a whole new year to play with/muck up. Since the end of December, I’ve been on secondment to a much. Such small sums, but they make a difference! Things I have learnt this year include:. Where is this going, then? And what does it mean for this blog? As for writing… A couple of interesting ...

A Long Way from the Source. Writing Involves Reading →. I know. Once again, it has been far too long since I wrote anything here. On the other hand, I actually have some news this time. I have finished (for a given value of finished) my article and sent it off. The buzz of finishing the article was soon eclipsed by the realisation that I now have essays due for my Museum Studies. I guess I will get back to work. Tomorrow. This entry was posted in Writing. Writing Involves Reading →. Follow Blog via Email.

A Long Way from the Source. How do you get a bunch of teenagers to read? Particularly a bunch of resistant, rebellious, and incredibly noisy teenagers? My Year Ten class (ages 14-16) are a lovely group, but they will not stop talking, and many of them don’t read for fun at all. Or at least, that was how this year started. Left This way, at the end of about 20 minutes, there are four sheets of paper with book titles, author’s names, basic genre, and a brief outline of the book. This paper gets f...That wa...
